In Mexico City, a Design Playhouse

When DFC first appeared six years ago, this decorative-accessories company stood out for over-the-top designs that were not traditionally tasteful and did not play to any trends. Now its goods -- made in Mexico with age-old techniques that often lead to unconventional results -- are on display at DFC's first store, in Mexico City.

The company, started by Tony Moxham and Mauricio Paniagua, both transplants from New York, opened the shop in early December. The space, which offers items like fluorescent hand-painted trophy heads ($464), above, has a mirrored ceiling framed by pink neon tubing inspired by Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" video. "We consider this space something between a gallery and a store and a playhouse for our vision," Mr. Moxham said.

Did Microsoft Make Google Pay Triple Rate To Mozilla?

Many took this as charity, and for the purpose of advancing the web.

I don't think that's accurate. What would be more accurate is that many media outlets have misrepresented various Googler's comments that what Google pays Mozilla advances Google's interest in the open web, and that that is one reason why Google would continue to funnel lots of money to Mozilla even though it has its own browser which competes directly with Firefox as a claim about "charity".

That claim has nothing to do with charity, its a statement that is about revenue -- largely ad revenue, but also revenue from Google's other services -- because the more happy people are with doing things on the web (whether new things or things they previously would use desktop apps or non-web technologies for) the bigger the market is for online advertising, web application hosting, and all kinds of other services Google provides for a price. And the more the web uses open standards to do that, the more Google's various services that rely on scraping, analyzing, and summarizing data from across the web can do.

There's also, of course, the direct search ad revenue that Google derives from use of their products in search, which is the most direct and visible reason they would pay Mozilla to be the default Firefox search provider. And of course that's important, too. But their strategic interest in making the web friendlier to promote their whole host of services (which is still mostly advertising, but not all of that advertising is search advertising) is why they are consistently willing to pay more to be the default search provider in Firefox than Microsoft, for whom promoting the open web isn't a strategic interest in the way it is for Google. Because Google sees a return beside the direct search revenue that Microsoft doesn't, because Google's long-term business interest are more closely aligned with Mozilla's ideological interests.

GOP's Santorum fighting to contend in leadoff Iowa

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Rick Santorum isn't going down without a fight. In fact, that fight might be lifting him up.

The Republican presidential candidate who may have logged more miles than any other this year is more likely these days to be grinding it out on the campaign trail than trumpeting the buzz he's stirring among Iowa's conservative voters a week before the Jan. 3 presidential caucuses.

"We feel good," Santorum, a long-overlooked candidate in the GOP race, said with a thin smile as he left a midday campaign stop Tuesday in Mason City, seemingly hesitant - at least publicly - to buy into the notion that he's on the rise.

There are hurdles. His cash-strapped campaign has only just started running TV ads, and his organization is small in a state whose contests rely on the ability of campaigns to turn out a slew of supporters.

Still, there's evidence that Iowa Republicans, many of whom are still undecided and looking for a conservative candidate, may be starting to give the former Pennsylvania senator a look at just the right time.

"Rick Santorum could be a real surprise," said former Dallas County GOP Chairman Rob Taylor.

In recent days, Santorum's crowds have started growing as he rallies conservatives with a pit bull's pugnaciousness, and just a touch of anger.

He has earned the support of a number of key backers of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who won the 2008 Republican caucuses. They include former gubernatorial candidate Bob Vander Plaats, conservative Sioux City radio host Sam Clovis and some influential evangelical pastors.

He landed the endorsement Tuesday of evangelical conservative activists Alex and Brett Harris, founders of Huck's Army, a national group that supported Huckabee's 2008 campaign.

"He's the only candidate in this race I trust," said Chuck Laudner, a veteran Iowa GOP operative who introduced Santorum to more than 100 party activists on Santorum's fourth trip to Mason City. "And he's a fighter."

As if to prove the point, Santorum launched into a speech filled with pokes at the national media and his rivals. For 90 minutes, he tore into President Barack Obama, Hollywood and moderate Republicans - and, by implication, rival Mitt Romney.

While Santorum's profile in Congress as a social-issues crusader bought him entree with influential evangelical conservatives in Iowa, it's his unhesitating attack on liberals that seems to be fueling his rise in internal polls by rival campaigns.

"Let's look at colleges and universities," Santorum said in the ballroom of the restored Frank Lloyd Wright Park Inn Hotel on Mason City's town square. "They've become indoctrination centers for the left. Should we be subsidizing that?"

Santorum tossed out Harvard University's motto, "Veritas," Latin for truth. "They haven't seen truth at Harvard in 100 years."

Santorum refers to Obama as a "radical." Just as easily, though, he calls his own party's leaders "the good old guys you can count on to sell out in the end."

Even in entertaining questions from voters, he is frank and at times pointed.

"No, you're missing my point," he told Mason City Republican Julia Jones, a retired factory worker, as he tried to explain Social Security.

Jones, who walked into the event weighing Santorum and Texas Gov. Rick Perry, liked what she heard - and decided to support Santorum.

"He doesn't soften the edges, but he doesn't talk down to you either," Jones said. "He's just in-depth."

Fire kills 17 in Myanmar's main city of Yangon (AP)

YANGON, Myanmar ? A fire followed by several explosions engulfed state warehouses and neighboring homes in Myanmar's main city of Yangon on Thursday, killing at least 17 people and injuring 108.

The blasts occurred as firefighters were putting out the fire that had started in a state-owned warehouse before spreading to other warehouses and nearby homes and buildings before dawn.

Six of the dead were firefighters, a home ministry source said. He did not want to be identified because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

He added the fire and blasts destroyed 16 warehouses, a Buddhist monastery and 76 homes in Mingalar Taung Nyunt township in eastern Yangon.

A total of 108 injured people were brought to Yangon General Hospital, said a senior nurse. The nurse did not want to be identified because she is not authorized to speak to the media.

"Many of the dead were hit by flying debris of broken walls and stone slabs that were flung on to the streets due to the explosions," Maung Win, a 45-year-old resident, told the Associated Press.

The explosions rocked the entire city, jolting residents from sleep. A 20-foot (6-meter) -wide and 15-foot (4.5-meter) -deep crater was visible at the site. Black smoke was seen billowing from the rubble Thursday morning.

Firefighters were searching for bodies from among the debris.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire, but the home ministry official said the explosions were due to chemicals, including ammonia and potassium nitrate, stored in one of the warehouses.

Residents said the fire started in a warehouse that stored electronic goods then spread to other warehouses and houses.

Take these steps to improve finances in 2012

Every January, it's the same drill. This is the year you will cut your debt, save money and spend more wisely.

    1. Injured model is ?making remarkable strides?

While Lauren Scruggs continued to make a remarkable recovery after colliding with an airplane propeller, a large group of ...

    4. Rancic back at work after double mastectomy
    5. Resolution reads: 6 books for a better you in the New Year

And you, like millions of others, will fail again for no good reason.

Want to break the cycle of broken New Year's resolutions? The professionals say you've got to get automated, get educated, and get over the fear of making changes.

But first things first.

Get rid of those hazy promises to yourself about your fiscal behavior. Sit down and make a list about exactly what you want to achieve, advises Scott Halliwell, a USAA financial planner. Designate actionable items for each month, starting with spending January to get your budget and savings plan on track.

There's a difference, for example, between "I want to increase my savings," and "I want to have $1,000 more in the bank by April 1."

How do you get from here to there? Here's how you start:

Automate as much as possible
One key way to stay on track is to make things as easy as possible. "If you don't automate it, oftentimes things won't get done," Halliwell said. "Life will get in the way."

Setting up automatic savings is easy on most bank websites. Doing so makes you much more likely to keep that resolution to save more. Add auto bill pay, and you will take a big step toward avoiding late charges that run up costs unnecessarily. Making payments on time is also the single most important thing you can do to maintain a healthy credit score.

Automation doesn't mean you can avoid periodically checking on your progress, however. At least once a month, designate a day to go over your performance during the prior few weeks, and make any adjustments that are necessary.

Check your credit reports
Everyone is entitled to one free credit report per year from each of the three major agencies, TransUnion, Equifax and Experian.

The data in these reports is what's used to determine your credit score, which in turn is what banks and credit card companies use to decide if they'll lend to you and at what interest rate. You'll get a good picture of what problems exist that can drive down your credit score, like late payments or a forgotten bill that went to collections. And you may find mistakes that could be hurting your score as well.

A low credit score can cost you big. The difference between a 4 percent interest rate and a 5 percent rate on a 30-year, $200,000 mortgage, for instance, is nearly $42,000 over the life of the loan.

By spacing the free reports out to one every four months, you can also monitor your records for unexpected activity that may indicate you're a victim of identity theft. To learn more and start the process of obtaining your free reports, visit www.annualcreditreport.com.

To take things a step further, you can visit www.myfico.com, which is offering a free credit score to those who sign up for a 10-day free trial of its credit monitoring service. After the 10 days, the service is $14.95 per month.

Take advantage of all your job benefits.
You may be up to speed on how much your co-payments cost, but are you aware of all the benefits offered through your health insurance? Log in to your insurance company website to find out if you're eligible for reimbursement or discounts on health club memberships or programs to help you with weight loss or quitting smoking. You may even be able to check a few other resolutions off your list at the same time you save a few dollars.

Likewise, many companies and unions offer extra benefits that are often overlooked, from discounts on cell phone plans and computer purchases, to reduced price travel and entertainment, pet insurance, college test preparation programs and even legal advice. Ask your human resources department or visit UnionPlus.org to learn how you can shave dollars off spending you'll likely be doing anyway.

Rebalance your investments
Rebalancing involves adjusting the mix of stocks, bonds and other assets you hold to keep them appropriate for your stage of life and the amount of risk you're willing to take. In general, most advisors say the older you are, the less risk you want to take, which means a higher portion of bonds than stocks.

The first step of the process is setting the targets for what sort of mix you should have. "For all of us, those targets change as time goes by," said Christine Benz, director of personal finance at Morningstar Inc. "What's right for you when you're 25 is not necessarily right for you when you're 40."

Even if all you have is a 401(k) plan through work, it's important to make sure the funds you picked when you first enrolled are the best choices for you now. If you own additional mutual funds or have an IRA, those items should be considered as well, to create as complete a picture as possible.

The market volatility of the past few years adds to the importance of taking a periodic look at your holdings, but may make it more difficult to decide the best steps to take. Rebalancing often seems counterintuitive, Benz noted, because it can involve selling holdings that are doing well and shifting that money to investments that have underperformed recently.

So especially if you haven't made any adjustments in the last few years, it may be worth spending a few dollars to enlist the help of a financial advisor. An advisor can be an even bigger help if the thought of dealing with investments battered by the economy leaves you full of fear.

"The hardest part for rebalancing for most people comes down to the practical application for doing it," said USAA's Halliwell. "One of the things that getting outside help can do for you is help remove some of the emotion."

Chinese environmentalists target Apple

Kai Ryssdal: Apple is, as most people know, a company that likes to let its products do the talking. Pretty much everything else -- from Steve Jobs' health to who makes the innards of all those iPhones and iPads -- is essentially off limits.

That brings us to today's story. A coalition of Chinese environmental groups is accusing Apple of ignoring some serious problems at the factories where its gadgets are put together. But Marketplace's Steve Henn reports -- thanks to the aforementioned secrecy -- tracking Apple's environmental footprint is way easier said than done.

Steve Henn: Researchers at the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs in Beijing found evidence that factories suspected of supplying Apple with parts are poisoning waterways. Others factories believed to be working with Apple had been cited by the Chinese government for environmental violations.

Casey Harrell: Apple is coming under the spotlight here because of their lack of disclosure.

Casey Harrell is at Greenpeace. Harrell says environmentalists around the world want all tech companies -- Apple included -- to be much more transparent about their supply chains: who they're working with and what those factories are doing to the environment.

Harrell: If you can't measure it, we can't improve upon it. So we definitely push for sunshine.

Apple says it enforces "a strong environmental code of conduct" for all its suppliers; it audits them aggressively and publishes what it finds. But when it comes to naming names of firms it works with in China, Apple prefers to keep the competition in the dark.

Dale Ford: Apple is extremely secretive -- in fact, they are notorious for their secrecy.

Dale Ford is a supply chain analyst at IHS iSupply.

Ford: If you get an idea of who their suppliers are and who they are working with, you start to begin to speculate about what new features they are going to be implementing.

But if Apple doesn't disclose its suppliers or their environmental record to the public, Casey Harrell says Apple's consumers will never know exactly what their money is paying for.

In Silicon Valley, I'm Steve Henn for Marketplace.

Lady Gaga Sued By Bitter Former Assistant

The new poster child for frivolous lawsuits, Lady Gaga's former assistant claims she was a slave to the music superstar and demands compensation as a result.

Jennifer O'Neill claims she was burdened by onerous tasks such as fetching a towel for Gaga after she showered, and keeping the Lady on a tight schedule!

She claims she is owed $380,000 in overtime (7,168 hours over 13 months, or $53 an hour) that she was never paid by a touring company hired by the star.

Lady Gaga in a Yellow Dress

O'Neill claims she had to cater to Gaga in "stadiums, private jets, fine hotel suites, yachts, ferries, trains and tour buses" and "required to be at Gaga's beck and call."

Isn't that what a personal assistant does?

O'Neill was technically en employee of the touring company, not Gaga, so the singer is not personally liable regardless of the overtime compensation claim.

In any event, Lady Gaga's rep told the New York Post the lawsuit is "completely without merit," and we would have to guess that the rep is correct.

(AP) ? Hundreds of Christian faithful, defying lashing rains and wind, celebrated Christmas Mass at Jesus' traditional birthplace on Sunday, spirits high despite the gloomy weather.

Worshippers dressed in their holiday best rushed under cover of umbrellas into St. Catherine's Church on Manger Square, leaving the plaza, with its 50-foot-tall (15-meter-tall) Christmas tree, deserted. The church was packed, and the overflow crowd waited eagerly in an arched corridor for a chance to enter.

Inside, supplicants, some dressed in the traditional attire of foreign lands, raised their voices in prayer, kissed a plaster statue of a baby Jesus and took communion. St. Catherine's is attached to the smaller Church of the Nativity, which is built over a grotto where devout Christians believe Jesus was born.

"Lots of pilgrims from around the world are coming to be here on Christmas," said Don Moore, 41, a psychology professor from Berkeley, Calif., who came to Bethlehem with his family. "We wanted to be part of the action. This is the place, this is where it all started. It doesn't get any more special than that."

With turnout at its highest in more than a decade, proud Palestinian officials said they were praying the celebrations would bring them closer to their dream of independence.

Bethlehem, like the rest of the West Bank, had fallen onto hard times after the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation broke out in late 2000.

Although civil affairs in the biblical town on Jerusalem's southeastern outskirts are run by Palestinian authorities, security control remains in the hands of Israel, which built a barrier around three sides of the town to keep Palestinian attackers out.

Palestinians say the barrier has badly hurt its economy, which depends heavily on tourism, by severely restricting movement in and out of the town.

But as the violence has subsided, tourists have returned in large numbers. An estimated 100,000 visitors streamed into Manger Square on Christmas Eve, up from 70,000 the previous year, according to the Israeli military's count.

With the barrier looming large over the celebrations in Bethlehem, Palestinians have tried to draw attention to their quest for an independent state with this year's Christmas slogan, "Palestine celebrating hope."

Late Saturday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told a meeting of Christian leaders that he is committed to reaching peace with Israel.

"I hope they will come back to their senses and understand that we are seekers of peace, not seekers of war or terrorism," said Abbas, a Muslim like most Palestinians. "The mosque, church and synagogue stand side by side in this Holy Land."

Israel had allowed about 500 members of Gaza's tiny Christian minority to travel through its territory to the West Bank to celebrate Christmas in Bethlehem. Most of Gaza's 3,000 Christians belong to the Greek Orthodox denomination, which celebrates Christmas next month.

Nervous banks stash money with ECB

(AP) ? Banks from the 17 countries that use the euro stashed euro347 billion ($453 billion) overnight with the European Central Bank on Thursday, in another sign that Europe's debt crisis is still putting pressure on the banking system despite massive central bank support.

The figure announced Friday is the highest for 2011, topping euro346.4 billion earlier this month.

Banks use the deposit facility every day in fluctuating amounts to offload cash. The upsurge is a sign of mistrust in the interbank lending market where banks raise operating funds. Heavy use suggests they are depositing money with the central bank at low interest rates because they are afraid to lend it to other banks for fear they won't be paid back.

Europe is suffering from a debt crisis marked by concerns that heavily indebted governments such as Italy may be unable to pay off their bonds. That means trouble for banks because they typically hold government bonds.

The large deposits follows Wednesday's massive central bank credit operation, in which the ECB let banks borrow as much as they wanted for up to 3 years. The credit offer was part of a package of bank support measures announced Dec. 8. As a result 523 banks took euro489 billion, the largest ECB loan operation in the 13-year history of the euro. Another three-year credit offering will be held Feb. 28.

The European Central bank has stepped up lending to banks to help them get through the crisis. Some of the banks are finding it extremely difficult to raise money elsewhere, so the bank steps in as lender of last resort, a typical role for central banks in times of turmoil.

The bank has refused to play the same role for governments by buying large amounts of their bonds, saying they must get their debts under control through their own efforts and not wait for a central bank rescue.

It underlined that stance again on Friday by holding down its purchases of government bonds to only euro19 million. The ECB has been buying government bonds on a limited scale, which has helped drive down the borrowing rates that Italy and Spain face in the bond market.

But it says the program is not infinite and that governments must not rely on central bank efforts to lower their borrowing costs. That must be down, ECB head Mario Draghi says, by getting deficits under control and taking steps to improve growth.

It bought a minimal euro3.36 million last week. That makes two weeks of near-negligible purchases, following euro635 million the week ending Dec. 9 and euro3.66 billion the week ending Dec. 2.

Italian 10-year bond yields remained elevated Friday at 6.90 percent, another sign that the markets remain fearful of a default by the eurozone's third-largest economy. Before the crisis spread to Italy, it was able to borrow at under four percent as recently as October 2010.

European governments are trying to win back the confidence of bond market investors by reducing deficits, a difficult job in a slowing economy. Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti won approval Thursday from the Italian Senate for euro30 billion in additional cutbacks and revenue increases.

Greece is working on a deal to cut its debt by making bondholders accept a bond exchange that would mean a 50 percent reduction in the value of their investments. The bondholders could accept that instead of the larger losses that would come from a disorderly default not agreed in advance.

A top ECB policymaker said in an interview published Friday that the central bank could use its power to create new money to buy financial assets if a deteriorating economy threatens the eurozone with deflation ? falling prices.

Lorenzo Bini Smaghi, who is leaving office next week, was quoted by the Financial Times as saying he saw "no reason" why the bank could not use the technique, called quantitative easing by economists. Both the U.S. Federal Reserve and the Bank of England have used it after lowering interest rates to record low levels and finding that their economies still needed more stimulus.

The ECB's mandate is to provide price stability, so fighting deflation could be consistent with that. At the moment, however, inflation is running at 3.0 percent, well above the ECB's goals of just under 2 percent.

Venezuela prosecutor opposes extradition of rebel (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Venezuela's top prosecutor said Thursday that she doesn't think Colombia has provided a proper request for the extradition of a Colombian rebel commander who was captured in Venezuela.

Attorney General Luisa Ortega said she has provided her opinion to the Supreme Court, which will decide on Colombia's extradition request.

Guillermo Torres Cueter, better known by the alias "Julian Conrado," was captured in southwestern Venezuela in May, and the authorities say he is a commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.

Ortega told state television that the accusations Colombia cited in its extradition request were "different from the crimes on which he is wanted."

Colombian officials did not immediately react to Ortega's announcement.

The authorities have described Torres as the most senior FARC commander captured since 2004 in Venezuela.

He is wanted by Colombian authorities on charges of homicide, kidnapping and rebellion.

The U.S. government had also offered a $2.5 million reward for information leading to Torres' capture. The U.S. State Department said he participated in directing the FARC's production and distribution of cocaine bound for the United States and other countries.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said in June that Torres' capture indicated that cooperation between Venezuela and neighboring Colombia was producing positive results. Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos also praised Torres' capture, which was carried out by Venezuelan authorities with help from Colombian officials.

Chavez has not recently expressed an opinion on Torres' fate.

Venezuela's Communist Party, which is allied with Chavez's government, presented a request for political asylum on Torres' behalf in August. The party called his capture illegal, saying he had been working as a farmer in Venezuela and wasn't armed.

Communist Party leader Pedro Eusse said at the time that Torres expressed fears he could be tortured or killed if sent back to Colombia. Eusse also said Torres' had a problem with his prostate and that his health troubles should weigh in favor of the asylum request.

Ortega said officials were checking on Torres' health.

Yul Jabour, another leading member of the Communist Party, praised the attorney general's decision on Thursday and said the party now hopes the authorities will rule on the asylum request.

PHILLIES SIGN TWO ... BUT LOSE RIVERO TO WASHINGTON

Posted at 02:47:50 PM on December 21, 2011

The Phillies have signed infielder Hector Luna and outfielder Luis Montanez to minor league contracts, inviting both to spring training.

But they also lost infielder Carlos Rivero, who had a break-out season at Reading and was a likely candidate for the IronPigs roster, on waivers to Washington.

The 23-year-old Rivero, who the?Phillies claimed off waivers from Cleveland last winter, hit .275 with 15 homers and 66 RBIs for Reading last year while making the switch from shortstop to third base. He also played briefly for the IronPigs (.185-1-5 in 27 at-bats) in early August before being sent back down to make room for the ill-fated Jack Cust experiment.

Rivero was?designated for assignment?to add Jimmy Rollins back to the roster.

As for??Luna, the 31-year-old played for Pawtucket last year, hitting .283 with 14 homers and 58 RBIs in 113 games, and has averaged 14, 59 RBIs and a .269 average in 104 games over his last four Triple-A seasons.

Luna has also hit?.265 with 13 home runs and 86 RBI in 311 games between the Cardinals (2004-06), Indians (2006), Blue Jays (2007-08) and Marlins (2010).

Montanez, the third pick in the 2000 draft, hit .321 with 22 doubles, seven triples, seven homers and?69 RBIs in 92 games for the Triple-A Iowa Cubs last season. the 30-year-old also hit .222 in 36 games (54 at-bats) for the Cubs last year and is a .229 hitter in 129 big-league games with the Orioles and Cubs over the last four years, including a home run in his first major league at-bat.

He's a .283 hitter in 277?Triple-A seasons, a .287 hitter overall in?12 minor-league seasons. He also won the 2008 Eastern League Triple Crown (.335-26-97) while at Bowie despite playing in only 116 games.

Sprint LTE phones to arrive 'in the second half' of 2012

Sprint CFO Joe Euteneuer has spilled the 4G beans on the carrier's plans to introduce LTE devices, narrowing it down to the third quarter or the beginning of the fourth quarter next year. Compared to what we've already heard, Sprint looks to be stepping up its game: "We're talking about covering 120 million [people] by the end of 2012 -- we've accelerated this because we believe LTE is really key to our future." The Now Network will offer up "a number of different models" on the next generation network, and hopes to reach 250 million potential customers by the end of 2013.

The company also added that it will be paying $350million to ClearWire spread over two years, "if they meet targets in delivering LTE to sites where traffic is heaviest." But what does the future hold for those less fortunate WiMAX users? Stay calm: the Sprint CFO reiterated that the other 4G network will continue to be supported until 2015.

Naked mole rats make deformed, sluggish sperm

Abandon the rat race at your peril. Naked mole rat colonies contain just one sexually active male ? and the lack of competition has left its sperm shrivelled and sluggish.

Liana Maree of the University of the Western Cape in Bellville, South Africa, and colleagues took sperm from captive naked mole rats and subjected them to a battery of tests.

Only 7 per cent of the sperm actually moved, and they swam at around 35 micrometres per second ? possibly the slowest sperm of any mammal.

"The reason they look so ugly and swim so slowly is there is no sperm competition," says Maree. Naked mole rats live in colonies dominated by the queen, who chooses one male at a time to mate with. She suppresses the reproductive instincts of every other male in the colony. Because the chosen male has exclusive mating rights, he can afford to produce sperm that will dawdle on their way to the egg.

"The authors have done a pretty good job of arguing that inbreeding is not driving the sperm degeneration, because the colonies they sourced sperm from were specifically outbred," says Matthew Gage at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, UK. "It just goes to show how very important sperm competition is as an evolutionary force acting on sperm form and function."

"The naked mole rat is actually a very good model for what happens in humans," Maree says. Previous studies have found faster sperm in more promiscuous speciesMovie Camera. Humans are relatively monogamous, so sperm competition is fairly low and abnormalities are common. Typically, about 60 per cent of human sperm are motile, compared with 95 per cent in more promiscuous species.

Campaigns turning more to Web to link with voters (AP)

NEW YORK ? As they peruse the Internet, voters in New Hampshire and Iowa are probably seeing ads for Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama alongside those for shoes and holiday gifts. The ads will then follow those voters around the Web, popping up on news sites, Google searches and on social networking sites like Facebook.

Online advertising, once used primarily as a way to reach young and heavily wired consumers, has emerged as an essential communications tool in the 2012 presidential contest. While few expect Web ads to supplant television commercials anytime soon, strategists say online ads may be the most nimble, efficient and cost-effective way to reach voters.

"Online advertising cuts through because of its ability to target. It's unparalleled in any other medium," said Romney's digital director, Zac Moffatt. "TV may be more effective for driving a big message, but per usage, the Internet is more powerful. We are probably one presidential cycle from everyone believing that."

Web ads can take many forms, from small display boxes to clickable videos to 15- or 30-second commercials known as "pre-rolls" a viewer sees before the start of a news clip or YouTube video.

Targeting is key. While campaigns invest heavily in television ads to reach a mass audience, Web ads are geared specifically to people based on their ZIP code, demographics and, most importantly, their Internet browsing history.

That means someone who has visited the Obama campaign website will likely start seeing his ads on a number of different Web pages. And those who use Google to search for information on the Republican candidates might notice a Romney campaign pre-roll the next time they watch a TV show online.

Campaigns also buy ads on websites that cater to the different demographic groups the campaigns are hoping to reach.

"When someone expresses interest in politics online, it's an incredibly good time for the campaigns to talk to them," said Andrew Roos, a Google account leader who works with Democratic campaigns on Web ad strategy. "You want to grab people when they are paying attention and ask them to take another action, like send money or attend an offline event. It's an old-school organization principle that has been working its way online."

Campaigns were slow to adapt to online advertising even as the corporate world flocked to the Web with product ads years ago. Internet ad revenue climbed to nearly $7.9 billion in the third quarter of 2011, up 22 percent from the same time last year, according to the Internet Advertising Bureau, which tracks online ad spending.

Corporations now spend from 18 to 28 percent of their advertising budget online, while campaigns historically have spent no more than 5 percent.

Chris Talbot, a freelance campaign digital strategist, noted that big companies can devote considerable time, money and research to figuring out what works online and what doesn't. Campaigns don't have that luxury.

"There is no `next quarter' in politics, so campaigns usually revert to a template of what's worked in the past," he said.

In 2008, Obama and Republican presidential rival John McCain both did limited online campaign advertising. Web ads grew more prevalent in the 2010 midterm elections, when 85 of the top-spending House races and 600 interest groups bought display ads on Google.

To be sure, plenty of Internet users say they aren't thrilled with the proliferation of online ads, particularly those that follow them from site to site.

A USA Today/Gallup poll taken in late 2010 found 9 out of 10 respondents said they pay little attention to online ads. Two-thirds said they don't believe advertisers should be able to target them based on their past Web searches.

"The only way it works is on a mass scale. Most people ignore ads on the Web," said Aaron Shapiro, head of the digital marking firm HUGE.

Web ads' biggest advantage, many strategists say, is accountability.

"Online ads are very metric driven ? you can figure out how many impressions you got, how many people clicked, how many people signed up for an email address. All of that is calculated in real time," Google's Roos said. "It's much more efficient than direct mail and TV."

The Romney campaign's Moffatt said Web ads became part of the media strategy when officials there realized how much their own viewing habits had changed.

"Strategists here acknowledge they really don't watch live TV," Moffatt said.
