(AP) ? Hundreds of Israel's doctors are demonstrating in Jerusalem, stepping up their protest for higher wages and better hospital conditions.

Last week, doctors marched to Jerusalem and pitched tents, echoing a grass-roots movement of tent camps that have sprung up nationwide with young people demanding affordable housing.

Israel Medical Association chairman Dr. Leonid Eidelman has also gone on a hunger strike.

At a rally near Israel's parliament Sunday, he called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to intervene.

Israel's medical system is socialized, and everyone has coverage. Doctors say they are overworked, understaffed and underpaid.

As part of their protest Sunday, doctors closed outpatient clinics and delayed non-emergency surgeries.

Amazon tablet rumors flare on leaked supplier parts list

Last time on Days of our Rumored Amazon Tablets' Lives: Bezos teased us with a "stay tuned" cliffhanger, but shook his head at the notion of a color E Ink Kindle this year. While DigiTimes spilled its cup of beans about the devices' possible use of Fringe Field Switching displays and fabrication by Quanta Computer, the Wall Street Journal threw its two cents in with a report pegging a couple of new Kindles for Q3. Now loose-lipped sources are feeding the DigiTimes hearsay flames with a leaked supplier parts list that has Wintek, J Touch and CPT providing touch panels with NVIDIA processors at the tabs' cores. The Seattle-based company also purportedly plans to ship four million of these 7- and 10-inch slates by 2011's end. So, what to believe? We'll find out in due time, but with all this gossipy buzz you can place your bets on something.

Quince. Mayfair, Restaurant Review | Great British Life

What exactly is an ?Ottoman? restaurant? In the case of Quince, it?s a pleasing combination of Eastern Mediterranean influences and traditions, as directed by the visionary head chef Silvena Rowe. Rowe, a regular face on television cooking programmes, recently published a cookbook called Purple Citrus and Sweet Perfume, and it comes as little surprise that the dishes on offer at Quince cleave closely to her interest in Ottoman cuisine.

?

The room, in the May Fair hotel, is slick and stylish, with green glass giving it a vaguely exotic feel. Although there have been rumours that Rowe is too busy to put in full time appearances in the restaurant, she was front and centre in the kitchen on the night that we visited, taking the time to go round and meet the customers. As this is her first solo venture, one might assume that a lot is riding on its success. Thankfully, all is very much well.

?

Starters are divided into ?small dishes? and ?Quince dishes?. Avocado hummus and aubergine from the first were both superb, especially the avocado hummus. Only slightly over-tough pitta bread was any sort of blemish. Crispy squid, meanwhile, a Quince dish used cardamom, chilli and aioli to delectable, slightly spicy effect. A main course of 12 hour slow-cooked pulled shoulder of lamb to share was delectable, with the meat at truly melt-in-the-mouth softness. It was helped enormously by an excellent bottle of Chateau Musar, a wine taken sufficiently seriously to be given its own branded page on the wine list. Desserts of rhubarb cr?me brulee and orange baklava make for a lovely end to an excellent meal.

?

It seems likely that Quince will be an enormous success, and that Rowe will soon have yet another project to occupy her every waking hour. The only question that remains is, between the restaurant, cookbooks, TV shows and her personal life, when she?s going to get any sleep? (Alexander Larman)

Home Education Heretic: Indigo Children

I have written before of a tendency among British home educators to embrace crackpot beliefs and unconventional ways of thinking. These typically range from homeopathy to the New World Order. Over the last few months, I have been told of another such loopy idea which has apparently become very popular in some quarters. This is the idea of the so-called Indigo Children. Now I have of course heard of the Indigo Children, but was not aware that it was flourishing in this country. Like so many other weird belief systems, it started in the USA. Put briefly, the idea is this. Some children who have been diagnosed as or exhibit the signs of having an attention deficit or being hyperactive, are really very special and misunderstood by the rest of the world. Far from having special educational needs, they are really the forerunners of a new kind of human. This is curious, because others have observed that many home educating parents have the idea that their children are very talented and empathetic; although in ways which cannot be measured by conventional means.

Indigo Children have a number of characteristics. They behave as though they are very special and important. They are intolerant of authority and do not react well to being told what to do. They are amazingly sensitive and talented, but not in ways that schools recognise. They will not submit to the ?ritualised behaviour of society?; in practice, this means that they refuse to wait their turn in queues and so on. Many of them have been diagnosed as having ADHD.

Now all this is very interesting. There are two possible explanations for conduct of this sort. One is that these kids have been sent to the Earth by a higher power to lead us all into the Age of Aquarius or something of the sort. In other words, they are truly special, but our blinkered eyes are unable to recognise how important and special they are. The second possibility is that these are spoilt brats who have been indulged by their parents and allowed to get away with murder and that when they start school and find that they are not the centre of the universe, they take the news badly!

I have been given the names of a number of parents who are well known on the British home educating scene who, it is claimed, believe that their children are Indigo. I have no idea whether any of this is true, but it does seem to tie in neatly with a lot of what I have observed. Quite a few of the home educated children in this country have been diagnosed with special needs of one sort or another. In America, this is the group from whom the majority of the Indigo Children are drawn. Many British home educators do seem to think that their children are fantastically sensitive and have all sorts of abilities which conventional education has failed to recognise. The very idea of their taking GCSEs like all the other kids is absurd; they are far too special for such mundane things as examinations.

I am wondering if any readers have heard about this at all? As I say, I am not claiming that this it is actually the case that the Indigo Children business has taken a hold among British home educators; merely that I have been told by several people that this is the case.

Somali militants block famine refugees from aid (AP)

MOGADISHU, Somalia ? In a squalid refugee camp beside Mogadishu's airport, some 2,000 desperately hungry women and children await help, many of them weak and dying in tents made of sticks and cloth. Missing from the camp, however, are large numbers of Somali men.

The militants of al-Shabab are trying to stop men from joining the tens of thousands of people who are fleeing the parched regions of south-central Somalia that the fighters control, refugees told The Associated Press.

In many cases, the al-Qaida-linked militants are succeeding in intercepting the men, with some even being killed by the Islamists, the witnesses said Wednesday.

The devastating famine in the Horn of Africa threatens al-Shabab's hold on areas under its control, with the militants fearing that the disaster will drive away the people they tax and conscript into military service.

"They're godless. They have no heart. They want people to die of hunger," said one refugee, Fatima Mohammed, who traveled to the impromptu camp near the airport with five children but had to leave two weaker ones with her husband. She told the AP that she and her family tried to walk at night to avoid al-Shabab checkpoints.

In the past, the militants have blocked aid workers from helping those in need in Somalia, fearing that foreign assistance would undermine their control.

Mohammed said the militants even told the refugees: "It's better to die of hunger than to accept the West."

There are indications, however, that the militant leaders are bickering about whether to let aid in during the latest crisis. A Somalia official says 50 al-Shabab fighters have defected and joined the government in recent weeks.

A force of African Union peacekeepers is based down the road from the airport refugee camp. They have delivered water to those inside the camp, which has no toilets, and have treated more than 50 cases of measles.

A World Food Program plane with 10 tons of peanut-butter paste landed Wednesday in Mogadishu, the first of several planned airlifts in coming weeks. That will help, but Lt. Col. Kuamurari Katwekyeire, the civil-military coordination chief for the African Union Mission in Somalia, known as AMISOM, said the U.N. and other aid groups need to do more.

Those efforts by the AMISOM troops are helping to win over Somalis and counter the al-Shabab message, although there are no aid groups working inside the camp. The refugees have no way to get food, and many lie motionless inside the flimsy tents, too thin and weak to move.

One young child waved briefly at a reporter but soon lay his fly-covered head back down. Older, stick-thin refugees appeared on the edge of death.

Camp resident Hassan Ibrahim said one of his grandchildren ? a 4-year-old girl ? died and was one of 12 children buried Wednesday in the camp.

Ibrahim, 52, is one of the few men at the camp. He said he was one of the first arrivals from the famine-hit Bakool region, but that only days after he left, al-Shabab fighters arrested hundreds of men, beat them and forced them to stay behind.

At another refugee camp in Mogadishu, Ambiyo Isee said she fled the Bay region when her 50 goats died. She walked four days with three malnourished children and ended up in an al-Shabab-run refugee camp. She eventually fled toward Mogadishu.

"Al-Shabab forced us to either go back to our homes we left because of hunger or to stay in a fenced-in and empty camp," Isee said. "There was no food or water and the place was thorny, with small insects that gave our children rashes. ... In Mogadishu we get a little food, but it's rare and not enough. And our children are unfed. No one notices our pathetic condition."

AMISOM intelligence indicated that al-Shabab could launch an attack at a refugee camp in Mogadishu, either as an opportunity to hit the AU military force or as a way to discourage famine sufferers from leaving drought-stricken areas, said Lt. Col. Paddy Ankunda, a spokesman for the coalition.

"What we are seeing is a divide between al-Shabab leadership. Some are saying 'Bring the aid.' Some are saying 'Don't you dare.' Some are opposed to Western aid because they are fighting Western ideology," Ankunda said. "They are telling people 'Go back to your homes,' but they are not going back. So al-Shabab are getting angrier with the people."

There are signs the people are angry with al-Shabab as well. At the Dollo Ado camp in Ethiopia, refugees list hunger but also brutal human rights abuses by al-Shabab as the reasons they fled Somalia, said Millicent Mutuli, a spokeswoman for the U.N. refugee agency.

And Abdirahman Omar Osman, the Somali government spokesman, said that more than 50 al-Shabab fighters have defected and joined the government since the drought began.

One of them, Ali Hassan, stood Wednesday among a few dozen former teenage al-Shabab conscripts who have joined a program to disarm fighters. Hassan said al-Shabab fighters have told men for months that their women and children would be killed if the men left for a refugee camp.

Another former fighter, 17-year-old Abshir Mohammed Abdi of Kismayo, said the wave of famine refugees was too much for the al-Shabab group in the city.

"Even with women and children suffering from drought, al-Shabab would stop them, stop them, stop them until they couldn't stop them anymore," he said.

The Innovator's DNA: A book review by Bob Morris

The Innovator?s DNA: Mastering the Five Skills of Disruptive Innovators
Jeff Dyer, Hal Gregersen, and Clayton M. Christensen
Harvard Business Revidew Press (2011)

How and why disruptive innovators maximize creative impact

As is true of others who have written business books that also offer breakthrough insights, the authors of this one set out to answer an especially important question: ?Where do disruptive business models come from?? What Jeff Dyer, Hal Gregersen, and Clayton Christensen concluded is shared in this book. It?s too early to be certain, of course, but I think this book is destined to become a ?business classic,? as have so many of the other books that Christensen has authored or co-authored. It is worth noting that The Innovator?s DNA emerged from an eight-year collaborative study, suggesting that its information, insights, and counsel are research-driven, anchored in the real world.

Some of the most valuable material was generated by interviews of dozens of ?inventors of revolutionary products and services as well as founders and CEOs of game-changing companies build on innovative ideas.? They also include what they learned from Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, and Howard Schultz (whom they did not interview) whose innovative thinking has transformed entire industries. ?We wanted to understand as much about these people as possible, including the moment (when and how) they came up with the creative ideas that launched new products or businesses.?

The title of this book refers to an aggregate of five primary discovery skills that enable various innovative entrepreneurs and executives to generate breakthrough ideas. ?A critical insight from our research is that one?s ability to generate innovative ideas is not merely the function of the mind, but also a function of behaviors. This is good news for us all because it means that if we change our behaviors, we can change our creative impact.?

It should also be noting that an abundance of entrepreneurial research throughout the past 17-20 years reveals that, in terms of personality traits or psychometric measures, entrepreneurs do not differ significantly from typical (even traditional) business executives. My take is that almost anyone in almost any workplace can develop the five discovery skills. The extent and velocity of that development will largely depend on leadership. ?The bottom line: If you want innovation [enterprise wide], you need creativity skills within the top management team of your company.?

The co-authors include a disclaimer (sort of): ?First, engaging in the discovery skills doesn?t ensure financial success?Second, failure (in a financial sense) often results from not being vigilant in engaging all the discovery skills?Third, we spotlight different innovators and innovative companies to illustrate key ideas or principles, but not [repeat NOT] to set them up as perfect examples of how to be innovative.?

The five Discovery Skills are hardly head-snappers: Associating with stimuli? (mind, heart, and five senses); Questioning anything and everything, especially one?s assumptions and premises; Observing with intent and intensity, noting what many others miss;? Networking by connecting people as well as dots while accessing new (i.e. unfamiliar) resources; and Experimenting (e.g. test the untested, disassemble and deconstruct, prototype, add new knowledge). In the most innovative organizations or portions thereof, all five are institutionalized in terms of incentives and rewards, division of labor, allocating resources, transparency, cross-functional collaboration, recognition/celebration, and (yes) protection for prudent but bold risk-takers.

Not everyone is willing and/or able to thrive in such a culture. Disruption is by nature messy, unpredictable, confusing, upsetting, and often threatening. When Joseph Schumpeter introduced the process of ?creative destruction,? his ultimate objective was, in fact, creative creation. Just as Albert Einstein urges us to make everything as simple as possible but no simpler, Schumpeter urges us to destroy everything except what is essential?and then build on that. The authors of this book urge us to strengthen the five skills through individual and team initiatives that are guided and informed by a business model that, if it is designed properly, will be continuously self-disruptive.

Home Improvement | When and How to Replace Your Roof :: By Keith ...

The roof to your home is one of the most important aspects of the entire structure ? it protects the entire property from the effects of the environment ? wind, rain, snow, heat ? and can also be used to provide excellent lighting into your living space. It is vital that your roof maintains its structural integrity and that it is kept in optimal condition throughout its life and you should never let the roof fall into such a state of disrepair that it is unable to perform its function.

You should inspect the roof on a regular basis, and certainly once or twice a year you should be engaging in preventative and maintenance issues. The roof should be kept clear of branches and leaf debris and examined for signs of wear and tear. You should be looking for loose shingles or tiles, missing nails and fastenings and the flashings which seal the roof should be checked for integrity. You also check for worn shingles and for signs of mildew and mold which shows that moisture is being retained instead of being removed from the roof effectively.

If any issues are uncovered during these routine examinations then action should be taken immediately to rectify the situation. Dealing with these issues before they begin to manifest themselves in incidents such as leaks, will ensure that your home is protected and your family can safely enjoy the home ? you will also be able to deal with repair issues far more cheaply than leaving the problems until they become much bigger issues.

No matter how much time and effort you put into maintaining your roof, there will come a time when it needs to be replaced. Time and the effect of the environment will lead to a gradual and inevitable deterioration in the roof and its integrity- you will have no option but to replace the roof.

You can replace a roof yourself, however this is not recommended unless you really know what you are doing. It is usually far easier and safer to hire a roofing professional to perform the work for you. Hiring the professionals will ensure you get a quality finish which is likely to last for longer than an amateur effort. A professional team will also get the job done in a far quicker period of time which will minimize the inconvenience for your family and the risk to your home from the elements.

Make sure you obtain several quotes from a number of reputable suppliers. You should not be surprised to find that most of the quotes will be within the same price range. Ensure that you are comparing quotes on a like-for-like basis ? some suppliers may be cutting corners on the quality of the materials which are being used. Poor quality materials may result in enhanced maintenance costs for you or a shorter roof life which means you will need to replace it sooner than you otherwise need to. Always obtain references from your roofers and go and see a roof they have worked on and speak to the homeowner if possible to see what they have to say.

Pittsburgh's Roethlisberger weds in quiet ceremony (AP)

PITTSBURGH ? Ben Roethlisberger got the privacy he wanted for his wedding Saturday, with police providing tight security around the church in affluent Ohio Township where he and Ashley Harlan were married and tinted windows on expensive cars leaving much of the guest list a mystery.

Still, the hope of a glimpse at the Pittsburgh Steeler quarterback, his new bride and the dozens of team luminaries who turned out for the ceremony was enough for Dolly Metz to sit in a car ? complete with Steelers covers on the headrests ? in a nearby parking lot with the windows down in 90 degree heat.

"This is the best part of my day," said Metz, who lives in McKees Rocks. "I know he was supposed to send a limo for me too, but it broke down."

Metz and friends Eugene and Carol Lovely were among a small group of Steeler fans who tried to show their support for Roethlisberger.

The organization was well-represented too despite the NFL's ongoing labor dispute.

Owner Dan Rooney waved to security officials on his way inside and guests included linebacker James Harrison and former Pittsburgh running back Jerome Bettis.

Harrison entered in a rare Mercedes sedan, according to police, his presence perhaps proof there was no fallout from his criticism of the quarterback in a "Men's Journal" article released last week.

The Pro Bowler placed some of the blame on the team's Super Bowl loss to the Green Bay Packers on Roethlisberger in the story, then later apologized saying his comments were taken out of context.

Whenever Roethlisberger and his teammates return to the field, he'll be a married man, an idea that seemed to resonate with the fans who have watched his legal troubles the last few years with growing exasperation.

The Super Bowl winning quarterback has twice found himself accused of sexual misconduct. Though neither incident resulted in charges, he was suspended for four games by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell last year.

He returned to lead Pittsburgh back to the Super Bowl, and surprised some by revealing his engagement to the 26-year-old Harlan, a physician's assistant from New Castle, Pa., this spring.

Roethlisberger has acknowledged the need to restore his public image, and fan Linda Moule admitted she was a little skeptical when she heard the news because he's kept news of the relationship quiet for so long.

"It certainly is a step in the right direction," Moule said. "Like anyone, it's a coin toss on if it will last. This is certainly not Prince William and Princess Catherine."

That didn't mean Moule and her extended family didn't want to send Roethlisberger a message that they were behind him.

Sitting on her parents' lawn, Moule, her two sisters and their children waved as wedding guests passed by, with some honking their horns at the homemade sign the family put together that read "Best Wishes Ben & Ashley."

It would be as close as most would get to one of the most anticipated ? and most secretive ? social events in the city's recent history.

Fans and media alike were kept at a safe distance from the ceremony, the details of which were closely guarded. Little information about the nuptials was leaked beforehand, though the police presence around the Christ Church at Grove Farm ? where both Roethlisberger and Harlan are members ? indicated this was no ordinary Saturday.

Fears of a fan frenzy led local resident Gina Schrauder to bolt for the city.

"I want no part of this," she said early Saturday morning.

Yet it never came. There was no tailgating. No terrible towels. Only a parade of luxury cars, trucks, shuttle buses and SUVs.

Guests were required to show an invitation and a photo ID to get in. Moule didn't have a problem with the secrecy and considered the light turnout a sign Pittsburghers were content to let the Roethlisbergers have their space on their big day.

"We all have private weddings, why can't they?" Moule said.

Will marriage change him? Schrauder doesn't think it matters.

"As long as he keeps playing the way he's playing, it'll be fine," she said.

Heat Wave Blankets Midwest, East Coast

NEW YORK, July 21 (Reuters) - Sweating crowds on the East Coast and in the Midwest flocked to waterfronts and urban cooling centers on Thursday to escape a massive heat wave that has killed at least 22 people this week.

The National Weather Service issued excessive heat warnings for wide swaths of the country's mid-section and East Coast, saying the combined heat and humidity could spike the heat index or "real feel" of the warmth to 115 degrees through Saturday.

By early Thursday afternoon in New York City, the thermometer hit 91 but it felt more like 112, according to Accuweather.com.

Other cities watching their local heat indexes rise into the triple digits because of the oppressive mix of high temperatures and humidity included -- among others -- Tulsa, St. Louis, Buffalo, and Washington, D.C., according to the weather service.

In Chicago, where a five-day heat wave in 1995 killed hundreds, the city endured a fifth consecutive day of abnormally high temperatures with the heat index hitting 110 in the early afternoon -- and forecasters warned the heat wave could continue into the weekend.

In Oklahoma, where the heat has exacerbated a severe drought, Governor Mary Fallin said she planned to ease commercial vehicle restrictions to speed delivery of hay and other feed to cattle whose grazing areas have been destroyed by the weather.

Fallin said she would amend an existing drought-related emergency declaration she issued earlier this year to allow hay-haulers to operate bigger trucks with heavier loads on the state's roads.

"We have cattle that are starving," Fallin told Reuters, "and we have certain areas of the state where we need to get the hay delivered to the farmers and the ranchers and the cattlemen."

With the promise of refreshing ocean breezes, Boston's whale-watching ships and high speed tourist boats sold out their trips by mid-morning on Thursday.

Cooling centers in Richmond, Virginia, and New York City welcomed overheated residents and a truck labeled "Water Fountain on the Go" cruised Manhattan streets, offering to refill empty water bottles to keep residents hydrated.

Con Edison expected scattered outages in coming days amid an anticipated all-time high in electrical demand in New York, said utility spokesman John Micksid.

Unhealthy smog levels triggered by the heat were reported in Chicago, where residents were asked by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to reduce polluting activities such as idling cars and mowing lawns.

By the weekend the heat was expected to cover nearly 50 percent of the country and impact nearly half the population, according to AccuWeather.com forecaster Mary Yoon.

"What makes this heat wave so impressive is the pure size and longevity," said Yoon.

"Through the rest of this week and into the weekend at least 15 states starting from the Southern Plains and Midwest and much of the Northeast will witness 90 degree plus temperatures with high humidity," she said.

Longstanding records in Philadelphia and other cities may melt away by Friday, when the mercury was expected to spike, according to meteorologist Meghan Evans of AccuWeather.com.

"Do not take this threat lightly," the NWS warned in a statement on its website, noting the extreme temperatures are particularly dangerous for the elderly and the very young.

"The length of this heat wave will pose a very real and dangerous health risk to these at-risk groups and those that do not have access to air conditioning."

The low pressure system that barreled east was expected to bring powerful thunderstorms with hail to New England, forecasters said.

In the central United States, where the high temperatures have killed nearly two dozen already, more deaths were tied to the heat.

An elderly woman whose body was found in her bedroom in St. Louis, where a working air conditioner had not been turned on despite 99 degree temperatures, was determined on Wednesday to have died of heat stroke.

Similar causes of death were reported Thursday in Kansas City, Missouri, where a woman in her early 80s died, and in Hutchinson, Kansas, where three elderly people were found dead in their separate homes on Wednesday.

Of those who died in Hutchinson, one had a ceiling fan and another, a 76-year-old man, an air conditioner.

"He had an air-conditioning unit in the window but didn't use it because he didn't want to pay the electric bill," said Hutchinson Police Sergeant Thad Pickard.

Two people died from the heat in an Illinois county near the Mississippi River on Wednesday, St. Clair County Coroner Rick Stone said on Thursday.

They were identified as Willie Gill, 72, of East St. Louis, Illinois, whose body was found dead of heat stroke in a ditch near his home; and Kevin Miller, 51, of Belleville, Illinois, who was found dead of a heat-related heart attack on his front porch, which faced westward toward the setting sun.

Temperatures in the area, which is about 15 miles east of St. Louis, reached 100 degrees on Wednesday and again on Thursday. (Additional reporting by Bruce Olson, Lauren Keiper, Kevin Murphy, Karin Matz, Colleen Jenkins and James B. Kelleher; Editing by Greg McCune)
