UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Crafting public health messages about a disease may create stigmas that influence how likely people are to endorse certain interventions, such as isolating infected persons, forcing treatment on them and mapping their location, according to a Penn State researcher. Rachel Smith, associate professor of communication arts and sciences and investigator with the University's Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics, used a hypothetical disease -- a virus carried by rodents -- to develop 16 different health alerts describing the virus and those who were infected. The alerts, based on an existing alert developed by the Centers for Disease Control, indicated whether or not infected people were labeled by the disease. The alerts also indicated the disease was transmissible or not transmissible between humans; had visible symptoms (open sores on arms and a wet, loud cough) or no visible symptoms; and was fatal, painful, and caused paranoid delusions, or was mild and easy to cure.
The disease symptoms, labels associated with infected persons, perceptions of dangerousness, and responsibility comprise the four content cues in Smith's Model of Stigma Communication.
"These content cues can elicit responses such as disgust and anger," Smith said. "They can also shape the development of stigma and influence the likelihood that people will share a stigma message with others or endorse isolating and removing stigmatized people from community." The results, to be published in a forthcoming issue of Communication Monographs and available online now, showed that those communication choices, and how they made people think and feel, predicted how likely people were to endorse interventions.
In addition, people were more likely to want to share the stigma message with others if the disease had visible symptoms rather than no visible symptoms.
"The visible symptom might suggest that infected persons are different," Smith said, "and this could facilitate social bonding among people spreading the rumor, even if infected persons are not considered a group in and of themselves."
According to Smith, understanding how message choices influence the formation of stigma beliefs is critical.
"When stigmas form with infectious diseases, they can be barriers to health care access and provision in the short and long term," she said. "Understanding how communication choice in health messages influences the stigmatization process can give us the tools to write health alerts without creating or bolstering stigmas around infectious diseases. Once the stigmas are in place, we have few reliable ways to remove them."

I am so happy to be participating with the new Room Service Project this fall at the United Methodist Children?s Home in Decatur, Georgia.
Our lounge space, which looks identical to the bedroom we?re also doing
From the Room Service website:
In October 2012, RSA will redesign six apartments for the United Methodist Children?s Home?s Independent Living Program (Decatur). UMCH offers 11 different programs available to children, teens, and families in the North Georgia area including Foster Care, Adoption, Independent Living, Transitional Living, Summer Camp, Family Housing, Family Counseling, After Care, Parenting Classes and Financial Aid. With a mission to provide redemptive healing services that bring change to the lives of children & families, UMCH offer holistic & therapeutic programs focused on identifying new ways of thinking & living to create successful and meaningful lives forever.
Our focus is on the The Independent Living Program, a voluntary program serving youth in the foster care system who are at least 17 and ready for a decreased level of supervision as they prepare for independence. UMCH staff provide 24-hour support to the youth, who are housed in studio-style apartments on the campus. Staff also teach youth to maintain skills of daily living, support and guide youth in obtaining educational, vocational and employment opportunities, assist youth in obtaining medical services and securing mental health services as neededand much more! This project gives hope and inspiration back to our children as they transition into adulthood.
I?m partnering with two talented women, Lori May and Rhoda of Southern Hospitality, to refresh two rooms in the young men?s cottage?a bedroom and the adjoining lounge for the bedroom. ?And, caught up in the excitement of the initial meeting, I signed us up for the entry, too. ? Whoops. ?But it will be fun?and lots of hard work, but fun!
The cottage entry
I?m enjoying collaborating with these two design lovers?pooling ideas, resources, and energy. ?That?s the way to do it!
Planning meeting at the loft
Install is just a few weeks away! ?While the spaces won?t have the same kind of carpentry involved like my room on the last project, there is a lot of painting that needs to be done?furniture, faux paneling? ?I?m working on 3 paintings all 3?4? or larger for each space. ?I?m pulling from my decorative painting experience to make these paintings for a young men?s home since my own painting is, well, unabashedly feminine. ?Lace and pink sheep and ribbons probably won?t work here. ?It has been fun, and I love the excuse to paint for a good cause every available moment I have. ?I?ll share once I have more to show.
I got lucky at Habitat for Humanity Restore: ?a vintage little dresser for the entry, with the prettiest hardware. ?Chris painted it for me since I started having a mini panic attack about ?how am I going to get all this done?? ?Now it?s done and curing in the garage. ?Whew.
If you would like to contribute to our rooms, you can send a check to:

Please note ?Room Service?Angela? in the memo section so they can designate the money to our space?and please email me a ?FYI? so I know to ask for it. ?Any donation amount helps! ?We have a range of items on our shopping list, doing our best to stretch the dollar with practicality and beauty in mind. ?Thank you for considering it.
(Oh, and Rhoda snapped some photos on her phone of the loft when she came over last week?want to take a look?)

It was back in March 2010, Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) wrote to Ministry of Communications and Information (MoIC) on behalf of Nepal Telecom (NT) for the operation request of Wireless Broadband Internet ? WiMax in the Nepalese sky. Looks, like that dream of NT is going real. Nepal Telecom has been testing WiMax inside the ringroad of Kathmandu Valley now. NT officials has informally signaled that Nepal Telecom WiMax is scheduled for launch this Dashain/Tihar (November 2012).
Nepal WiMAX Project by Nepal Telecom
It has been known that NT has already tested 10 WiMax base stations (BS) in the Valley and going to install 40 more BS to expand the WiMax coverage in Kathmandu. The WiMax solutions has been provided by c, a US-based vendor for 4G Technology, WiMax Mobile broadband and LTE. Nepal Telecom had selected Airspan for countrywide 4G Coverage in Nepal only in last February 22, 2012.
TechSansar had already reported that the basic coverage of WiMax Microwave Line of Sight Communication is around the radius of 50 KM from the service provider?s wave transmitting station (BS) which is enough distance to cover the whole of Kathmandu valley. However, for the dense urban city Kathmandu the safest operating radius of WiMax is around 10KM. ?However, Nepal Telecom (NT) and Airspan designed the WiMax architect in such a way that a single BS can provide coverage of upto only 1KM with the least speed of 4Mbps. Expect even lesser bandwidth speed in compact and narrower city dwellings.
What is WiMAX after all?
WiMAX, broadband telecom service ? Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is one of the 4th generation mobile communication technologies considered to be the next generation of mobile telephony and data services for its higher bandwidth and coverage. High speed wireless internet is the ultimate portability based on microwave communication ? the Line of Sight(LoS) Communications. Read our Nepal WiMAX Project FAQs for more.Nepal Telecom WiMax project has expected the completion of 50 BS within November, and other 400 more Wi-Fi hotspots which will be monitored by NTA and approved the same for the tariff. The current proposal says, for the volume based package of 5GB WiMax Broadband Internet service in Kathmandu costs approx NRs 800. This cost of WiMax service is just preliminary, and we can expect more packages for domestic, corporate and businesses soon after they the service. The competition of NT Wimax with WiFi providers in Nepal will ameliorate soon.
NT will be outsourcing the Customer Premises Equipments (CPE) and WiMax support services to another 3rd party company, so the customers can expect a better service than it would be directly with NT.
While many city dwellers think that WiMAX is going to be in their reach, and other countryman (outside of the valley ? who are always neglected in first round of technology deployment by NT), they would not raise the voice that this WiMAX was initially proposed for rural networking. The increasing demand of Broadband in Nepal has been a matter of concern even for ITU (International Telecom Union) that?s why they provided their helping hands for broadband in Nepal, but the projects are snailing in paper based records in Authority houses.
For right now, Telecom has calculated that about 1500 hotspots for WiMAX BS will suffice the need of bandwidth in whole of the country. They should better cover the remote areas of Nepal with high Internet speed fast so that unnecessary works of cabling would be eliminated. This Wireless broadband service if comes along with telephony backend service (Nepal Telecom?& Airspan both haven?t expressed any concern over the telephony service via WiMAX in Nepal yet) would be a real praise for rural and remote villages. This will make 100% of the telephone and broadband internet penetration in Nepal.
We aren?t going to debate over WiMAX technology in Nepal against the Worldwide leading LTE, are we? (Read this) ? or are we foreseeing WiMAX will be ignored after a year of deployment as NTC is doing with 3G EVDO and IP-CDMA Projects currently? Let?s get smart here.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Miguel Cabrera's line drive home run in the eighth inning against Minnesota moved him into a tie with Texas star Josh Hamilton for the AL lead, bringing the first triple crown since 1967 that much closer to reality.
The blast may have been even bigger for Detroit's playoff chances.
Cabrera's home run gave the Tigers a five-run cushion they would end up needing and Justin Verlander struck out eight in seven innings in a 6-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday that gave them a two-game lead in the AL Central.
Cabrera's blast in the eighth inning off Casey Fien was his 43rd home run for the year. He also leads the AL in batting average (.327) and RBIs (136) as he looks to become the first player since 1967 to lead the league in all three categories.
"It's unbelievable what he's done this year," said Verlander, the reigning AL MVP who was wearing a dark blue t-shirt with the message "Keep the MVP in the D" and Cabrera's name on the front. "It's amazing to me how he keeps getting better. He's already the best hitter in the game and he keeps taking it to another level."
Verlander (17-8) allowed four hits and one unearned run to drop his ERA to 2.64 for the Tigers, who had to sweat out another close one.
Cabrera's homer proved to be a big one after Ryan Doumit hit a grand slam off of Joaquin Benoit in the eighth.
Al Alburquerque helped the Detroit bullpen do what it couldn't do against the lowly Twins on Friday night ? finish the game. Jose Valverde picked up his 33rd save. Prince Fielder and Andy Dirks also went deep for Detroit.
Chicago lost to Tampa Bay 10-4 moments before the final out of the Tigers game.
"I want to talk about the team," Cabrera said respectfully. "There's too many distractions right now and been talking too much about triple crowns. I pull too much attention. I don't want to do that. I want to go out there and play my game."
P.J. Walters (2-5) gave up two runs on four hits with five strikeouts in five innings for the Twins. Joe Mauer went 0 for 3 with two walks, dropping his average to .320.
One day after Detroit lost a game of cushion to the White Sox when reliever Brayan Villarreal couldn't find the plate in the eighth inning of a 4-2 loss to the lowly Twins, Verlander came out determined to make sure the Tigers kept the pressure on Chicago.
"That was a huge game for us," manager Jim Leyland said. "You look at the scoreboard and see the White Sox most likely are going to lose. That's a game you've got to win."
With a free and easy delivery, the right-hander kept his fastball at 93 or 94 mph while keeping the Twins off balance with an array of off-speed pitches. He started to ramp things up in the fourth when he blew Justin Morneau away with consecutive fastballs of 98 and 99 and hit 100 later in the inning.
It wasn't just Verlander's dazzling stuff that gave the Twins hitters problems. The afternoon shadows at Target Field make it very difficult for hitters to pick up the ball coming out of the pitcher's hand and often contributes to slow days for the offense.
That appeared to be the case early for Cabrera as well, who was befuddled by Walters. The slugger struck out in his first two at-bats and flew out to right in his third. Cabrera entered the day leading Mauer by five points in the batting race, Hamilton by eight in the RBI race, but trailing Hamilton by one in homers.
So will he be watching Hamilton down the stretch?
"I'll let you guys keep Hamilton in your eyes," Cabrera said. "I'll go to the hotel and get some breakfast tomorrow and try to win tomorrow."
The bigger prize, of course, is the division title. Neither the Tigers nor the Sox will qualify for one of two wild cards in the American League, so their only way in is through the division door.
"The last couple weeks, there's too much attention right now," Cabrera said of the triple crown. "I don't like too much of that stuff. But it's always good. You've got to feel comfortable with that. You've got to feel positive and be ready to play."
NOTES: Verlander left with nobody out in the eighth after Denard Span reached on an error, marking just the fourth time all season he's been taken out in the middle of an inning. ... One night after making a costly error late in a 4-2 loss to the Twins, Fielder was sharp at 1B, making a quick decision on a hot grounder from Jamey Carroll in the fifth. Fielder threw to third base and Cabrera chased Trevor Plouffe down to get the lead runner. ... Plouffe snapped an 0-for-18 skid with a double in the fifth inning. ... The Tigers will send RHP Anibal Sanchez (4-6, 3.95) to the mound for the series finale against Twins RHP Liam Hendriks (1-8, 6.09). Sanchez is coming off of his first shutout in more than a year, a three-hitter against Kansas City that put the Tigers into a tie for first place.
