The Wild Winds of Fortune: Card game du jour.

Tonight I spent a couple of hours playing "Cards Against Humanity: The Party Game for Horrible People." ?The most commonly repeated line of the evening was "This is just so wrong." ?An Amazon reviewer, commenting on the first expansion pack, stated "Imagine if the family card game 'Apples to Apples' was re-created by Hunter S. Thompson and Charles Manson on an ether bender. That's what you get with 'Cards Against Humanity'. Highly recommended to adults with filthy, filthy minds."

The opening question sort of set the tone:

Question: "What's that smell?" Winning answer: "Dead babies."* ?(I never said that my friends and I were not sick people.)

My favorite question and answer was not in the least gross or suggestive, however:

Question:
"This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
not with a bang but with

____________________ ?"

Winning answer:

"The inevitable heat death of the universe." ?(The second time this card came up, the winning answer was even better: ?"Ominous background music.")

Highly recommended for your really twisted inner teenager.

*I usually find "dead baby" jokes really obnoxious. ?The only one I've ever liked was "Why did the dead baby cross the road? ?It was stapled to the back of the chicken." ?That one I like for its complete bizarreness.?

Good Book Alert: 4 Stars for Circuits of the Wind: Volume 1

Circuits of the Wind: A Legend of the Net Age
Author: Michael Stutz
Genre: Literary Bildungsroman
Rating: 4 Stars

Circuits of the Wind is an intriguing coming-of-age story of both its main character and the Internet.

Summary:

Young Ray Valentine finds himself ?disconnected from his life. The purchase of a computer with a modem allows him to explore the growing virtual world connected by telephones and computers. As he delves deeper into this new world, he will have to balance his life both online and offline.

Review:?

We've come to take the commercial and personal Internet for granted. Even children carry around tiny mobile computing devices that can easily access vast amount of the world's information with ease, and yet we complain about the ability to quickly stream YouTube videos.

Back in the 70s and 80s, the 'net began its shift from being mostly a government and academic entity. With the spread of things like Usenet, bulletin board services(BBSes), and, for that matter, personal computers, cyberspace became the domain of everyone.

Circuits of the Wind explores the early years of both a young man interested in all things computer and computer networking related and the "early teen" years of cyberspace itself. The book forms the first volume of a trilogy that follows both Ray and the net from early Usenet and BBSes to the dot.com mania.?

The book is a psychological study of the kind of person who would want to spend hours a day chatting away and exploring on computer networks years before such things became?ubiquitous and fairly easy. Ray, like many early users, was as fascinated by the technology and techniques of the networking as the actual practical uses.

This intense focus will likely, however, ultimately divide readers. There is no grand plot here, just the growth and exploration of a young man and the technology that fascinates him. In particular, the interesting juxtaposition of people using a new communications technology to open up their options, yet still feeling isolated is something that resonates in this age of social networking. I found these subjects interesting enough, but readers looking for something a bit more plot-oriented or less interested in the early history of cyberspace may be?disappointed.

The writing style tends to be lyrical but verbose. In many books, this would had been distracting, but in this novel its effective, in that it does a good of reflecting the?analytic?mindset and detail-oriented focus of Ray.?

`The Loss of Secular Society` ~ Concepts (9-29-2012), Distortions ...

I am amused to see a guy ? John Van Huizum ? mention his two-decades of writing articles, and then, follow this resume reference with this:

I think that when you put God on a U.S. issued coin or banknote, you obviously ignore what should be a separation of church and state, as many of our founders intended.

Please, besides writing crap for two decades backed by nothing more than opinion, tell me what the Founders thought of ?separation of church and state? John. Tell me what books you have read to come to such a conclusion, please. And I imagine you would have read a few from each viewpoint to come to such a FIRM conclusion, like: ?you OBVIOUSLY ignore what should be a separation of church and state, as many of our founders intended? (emphasis added). In a paper I did on this topic, I note that the same persons that wrote and ratified the 1st Amendment, did something that according to John they shouldn?t have done if how he views the topic is true. For instance, as soon as they finished with Constitutional issues (its creation and passage), they immediately went to their prospective states and wrote their state constitution. Here are some excerpts from them:

State Constitutions

On the day the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, they underwent an immediate transformation.? The day before, each of them had been a British citizen, living in a British colony, with thirteen crown-appointed British state governments.? However, when they signed that document and separated from Great Britain, they lost all of their State governments.

Consequently, they returned home from Philadelphia to their own States and began to create new State constitutions.? Samuel Adams and John Adams helped write the Massachusetts constitution; Benjamin Rush and James Wilson helped write Pennsylvania?s constitution; George Read and Thomas McKean helped write Delaware?s constitution; the same is true in other States as well.? The Supreme Court in Church of Holy Trinity v. United States (1892) pointed to these State constitutions as precedents to demonstrate the Founders? intent.?

Notice, for example, what Thomas McKean and George Read placed in the Delaware constitution:

?Every person, who shall be chosen a member of either house, or appointed to any office or place of trust? shall? make and subscribe the following declaration, to wit: ?I do profess faith in God the Father, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, and in the Holy Ghost, one God, blessed forever more, and I acknowledge the Holy Scripture of the Old and New Testament to be given by divine inspiration.??

Take note of some other State constitutions.? The Pennsylvania constitution authored by Benjamin Rush and James Wilson declared:

?And each member [of the legislature], before he takes his seat, shall make and subscribe the following declaration, viz: ?I do believe in one God, the Creator and Governor of the Universe, the rewarded of the good and the punisher of the wicked, and I do acknowledge the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament to be given by Divine Inspiration.??

The Massachusetts constitution, authored by Samuel Adams ? the Father of the American Revolution ? and John Adams, stated:

??All persons elected must make and subscribe the following declaration, viz. ?I do declare that I believe the Christian religion and have firm persuasions of its truth.??

North Carolina?s constitution required that:

?No person, who shall deny the being of God, or the truth of the [Christian] religion, or the Divine authority either of the Old or New Testaments, or who shall hold religious principles incompatible with the freedom and safety of the State, shall be capable of holding any office, or place of trust or profit in the civil department, within this State.?

You had to apply God?s principles to public service, otherwise you were not allowed to be a part of the civil government.? In 1892, the Supreme Court (Church of Holy Trinity v. United States) pointed out that of the forty-four States that were then in the Union, each had some type of God-centered declaration in its constitution.? Not just any God, or a general God, say a ?higher power,? but thee Christian God as understood in the Judeo-Christian principles and Scriptures.? This same Supreme Court was driven to explain the following:

?This is a religious people.? This is historically true.? From the discovery of this continent to the present hour, there is a single voice making this affirmation?.? These are not individual sayings, declarations of private persons: they are organic utterances; they speak the voice of the entire people?.? These and many other matters which might be noticed, add a volume of unofficial declarations to the mass of organic utterances that this is a Christian nation.?

In other words, for two decades John has been writing hearsay and not doing the hard work a knowing what the ?F? he is talking about. Unfortunately, due to time, I am not able to critique other issues in this short article I found wanting. That being said, I am sure the reader gets the point from this single critique (as well as my previous) that John is your typical secular liberal. I think I agree with Milton Berle?s assessment of John (*wink*), ?with him, ignorance is a religion.?

Why Poetry Should be Metered | Literary & Visual Arts | Arts ...

By Evan Mantyk
Epoch Times Contributor
Created: October 12, 2012 Last Updated: October 13, 2012

Poetry should be metered, because metered poetry is, quite simply, better than free verse.? This is for the same reason that realist art trumps impressionist art and that Baroque music trumps rock and roll and hip-hop. It is because art, in its best state, is not about the experience of the individual it is about the shared experience of all humanity.

\>");

When you read a poem that is understandable and follows the most basic conventions that are accepted in the English-speaking world then it can be widely experienced and appreciated, whether by a young woman in Iowa or an old man in New Delhi.

The same goes for realist art and Baroque music. You may not like the poem, artwork, or music and may not find it particularly stimulating, but at the very least you can generally understand what it is, what some of its goals are, how it defines goodness, and how it strives toward that goodness. It is fairly easy to tell whether it has been executed decently or not.

In the case of a poem, if it maintains a balanced meter and if it relies on the standard conventions of poetry, such rhyme, alliteration, metaphor, simile, and others, then it is clear what it values as good. Now, whether such a conventional poem is actually good or not will depend on the contemporary message being conveyed and whether or not it is clear, engaging, and worthwhile. The prerequisite first, though, is that the poem meet the basic standards for being good. Your poem may have a message that is clear, engaging, and worthwhile, but the amount of people it would have the potential to reach would be severely fragmented and diminished.

The poetry, art, and music proliferated today moves further and further toward fragmentation in perspective. If you do not explain to a person why a modern poem, painting, or song is supposedly good, there is a strong chance they will have no idea that it is good at all.

This is not merely a philosophical discussion. The shared experience of humanity, either ignored by most modern poetry, music, and art or embraced by most classical poetry, music, and art, is something with real scientific implications. The most obvious being the Mozart effect, whereby by plants and children have been scientifically shown to benefit from listening to music by 18th century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Yet, the Mozart effect is really just the tip of the iceberg. British scientist Rupert Sheldrake calls this connection between our fellow men morphic resonance and posits that each person and animal has a morphogenetic field. The morphic resonance and morphogenetic fields operate across time and space with the connection being stronger between organisms and things that are similar.

Sheldrake discusses these concepts in the context of the human genetic code. Modern science poured billions of dollars into the Human Genome Project with the theory being that we could find bad genes that cause diseases passed on supposedly in your genes from your parents and could find genes that explain your physical and potentially mentally characteristics similarly passed on. Indeed, people today say something is ?in his genes? or say someone has ?bad genes? or ?good genes.?

Sheldrake posits that the whole approach is wrong. Modern science?s obsession with a human body and genes is like someone who has never seen a TV before taking it apart and wondering how the components create the images on the screen. It is the intangible signal coming in that creates the images. Similarly, it is the intangible morphogenetic fields and morphic resonance that determine what will happen. If you?re field is very similar to your father?s field and he had heart disease then it may be similarly warped in such a way as to create heart disease in you.

Sheldrake?s theory goes a long way in explaining inexplicable but observable phenomena in human and animal life. The implication for poetry and the arts is also profound. Regardless of what spiritual persuasion, or lack thereof, you may be from, reality as we know it is different from what modern science has told us. The intangible has much more power than we realize.

When poetry, art, or music aligns with the time-tested traditions left by millennia of poets, artists, and musicians and is widely acceptable by people today then it could truly have a positive impact on you and society, physically, mentally, and spiritually.? It positively activates the scientifically and undeniably real connection between all of us. Call it what you want, morphogenetic fields, the shared human experience, or simply good poetry.
