The human brain is one of the most active and important organs of the body. It is composed of soft tissue and millions of nerve cells that are encased within the cranium. While the cranium protects the brain, at times it can get damaged when the head sustains a blow or injury. The brain gets shaken up inside the cranium and this can damage the nerve cells, or the soft tissue. This damage can bring about changes in the functioning of the brain which, in turn affects the injured person's behavior. This damage is known as concussion.
Unfortunately, if a person keeps getting concussions often, it can result in permanent damage to the brain and cause psychological problems. It has been observed that men are more susceptible to concussions compared to females as they have a tendency to indulge into contact sports or get into fights. Also, young children have high chances of getting concussions as they have a tendency to fall.
Preventing concussions is extremely important if a person does not want to live the rest of his or her life dealing with health issues like memory problems, seizures and being more prone to Alzheimer's disease. Following are some ways to prevent a concussion.
? Most people sustain concussions during vehicular accidents. Hence, when seated in a car, it is necessary that a person always wears a seat belt. This will protect the head from banging against hard surfaces in the car in case the car meets with an accident. Also, the car should be equipped with airbags to protect the driver and the passenger seated in front.
? Many accidents are caused due to drunk driving and these accidents can result in concussions. Hence, a person should avoid drinking and driving.
? Seniors are more prone to falls as they tend to lose their balance and stability with advancing age. Hence, seniors should ensure that they wear flat heeled shoes to prevent falls. Also, if the senior has a health problem that affects his or her ability to walk steadily, the person should make use of a walking stick or a wheelchair to prevent falling and sustaining a concussion.
? Children should not be allowed to play on roads or sidewalks. If they fall on hard surfaces, they could sustain a concussion. Also, infants and toddlers should be supervised at all times, as they have a tendency to fall from beds or bang their heads while running.
? People indulging in contact sports, ride bikes or get thrills from adventure sports should always wear protective head gear to prevent getting head injuries.
