Bridesmaids was one of the funniest films of 2011, and is earning serious Producers Guild, SAG, Golden Globe and even Oscar buzz. It was also immensely profitable.
Earning nearly $300 million on a budget just north of $30 million, Bridesmaids is obviously spawning sequel rumors, a la The Hangover. Seems like a no-brainer, right?
Not necessarily. Universal pictures has indicated its desire for a Bridesmaids sequel, but star and co-writer Kristen Wiig is said to be lukewarm to the idea.
Wiig and writing partner Annie Mumolo say they have little interest. “Annie and I aren’t planning a sequel. We are writing something else,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.
The film clearly wasn't intended to be a franchise, and she's made no secret of wanting to pursue other projects. Could there even be a Bridesmaids 2 without Wiig?
It's certainly possible, but whether the rest of the cast - Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Maya Rudolph, Ellie Kemper - would return is a huge question mark as well.
The cast was reportedly disappointed with the modest bonuses they earned after Bridesmaids' success. Of course, doing a sequel could net them all a huge raise.
