We knew Green Day were in the studio, but we never could have guessed what they had in store.
According to a press release from the band Wednesday (April 11), Green Day are recording a trilogy of albums — appropriately titled ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tré! — which will be released between September 2012 and January 2013.
"We are at the most prolific and creative time in our lives," Green Day said in the statement. "This is the best music we've ever written, and the songs just keep coming. Instead of making one album, we are making a three album trilogy. Every song has the power and energy that represents Green Day on all emotional levels. We just can't help ourselves ... We are going epic as f---!"
That excitement echoes a tweet from frontman Billie Joe Armstrong just a few months ago on Valentine's Day, which first tipped us off to the impending 21st Century Breakdown follow-up(s). "Happy Valentine's Day!" Armstrong wrote on Twitter. "Officially started recording the new record today. It's F--- TIME!!!!"
¡Uno! — which drops September 25 — will be Green Day's first studio album since 2009's Breakdown. And ¡Dos! and ¡Tré! (whose title eschews the Español pattern in favor of drummer Tre Cool's first name) will follow soon after, on November 13 and January 15, respectively. Green Day have reunited with producer Rob Cavallo and are recording in their hometown of Oakland, California.
The guys are touring overseas this summer, hitting festivals in Japan and France in August and Germany and Italy in early September. Last year, the band played a secret show in California that included a reported 15 new songs, though it's not known if those songs will make any of the three new albums.
Are you excited for not one, not two, but three new Green Day albums? Let us know in the comments!
