Yes, It Can Be About the Writing

Bloggers who have clear mission statements and polished messages make me green with envy.

I wonder how they do it. How do they pick one topic and stick with it?

When something rings of truth there is an ease about it that I wish I had. When a design is simple, but tasteful it pulls me in, but I want to cry while I am reading. Why can?t I be like that?

Most people don?t realize how much work it takes to be simple, to come up with clean designs and to pound out messages that speak right to the heart. I struggle with simplicity and I over-complicate most things in my life.

For a few weeks I even pulled my whole blog sidebar down, frustrated by what it needed to say. I am intrigued by bloggers who seemingly do not need their widgets. If you ask them they will tell you it should be about the content and we should not distract from that.

Then I realized when I was on other blogs I spent most of my time scanning the sidebar just to see what they were all about. I wanted to know more about what they had to offer or more about the person who was writing.

There is nothing more frustrating to me than to come to a blog with no name, no picture or no about me page.

There are many reasons for blogging. Some are about the products and affiliate links, some are about ideas and movements, some blogs are created merely to promote books and some are for training and teaching.

But what is it about to me? What is my online space about? Is my message clear?

I created a hypothetical situation to try and figure it out based on what would most interest me. What would I most want to find online?

So, here is my hypothetical situation -

I just read an inspiring pdf that was forwarded to me by a friend. Wow, this writer somehow just gave me permission to dream! I picked up a pen. I couldn?t stop writing. What did she say exactly to motivate me? There was something inside her words. I want to read more and I want to find out more about her ? more about her life ? more about her creative struggles. What is it like? How does she come up with ideas? Are there days she feels flat? Does she feel like a failure? Does she struggle with criticism? I think I could learn a lot from her life.

And there it is. The message is clear to me.

Sometimes it can just be about the writing or more simply about the writer.

It can be about the person without an agenda. And in being about the person, the writer or any artists, it is simply about the art.

I would have been disappointed if I had gone to that hypothetical blog to find an agenda. For example, a great writer who is also selling marketing tips. I did this for a couple of years because I didn?t believe that it could just be about the writing.

The sub-heading on my blog header has gone through many changes as I?ve tried to figure out and hone my message. But for me, the journey is the thing, not the end or any destination, but what it is like to live inside this creative head. What do I learn from experiencing and re-experiencing?myself every day?

My writing journey is more than just words on a page. It is about getting up and making the space for it. It is about dealing with angst and joy all in the same day. Dealing with criticism and self-perceived failure. Understanding why Social Media affects me. It is about the painful process of editing and sometimes trashing lines or words I loved.

And what I know is that spirituality and creativity run on parallel tracks. One takes the lead as the other falls behind, but there are certain moments when they run full speed side by side, and this is what I call synchronicity. And this is when the messages are clear.

So, a new sub-header, ?A Writer?s Journey?The Weblog of Nicole~ Rushin.?

The journey is the thing. Destinations are few and far between.

Yes, it can be about the writing.
