I don't 0ver-vaccinate my pets. And we have a lot of pets. Four dogs, three cats, three bunnies. But the dogs and cats are actually all not in the house. They have their own two story "miniature" house which is the size of a small living room that is temperature controlled. My husband is severly allergic to the cats, mildly to the dogs. My cats have an outdoor run and a huge :kitty house". My husband isn't allergic to the bunnies, but usually they prefer it outside in the summer so they are only indoor half the year. Also, my sister and her husband and their two small children will be renting our basement apartment. They have one dog and one cat, also that are not 0ver-vaccinated (i.e. "up to date"). Her cat had kitten shots but not since and her dog is a senior 12 year old Cocker.
Two of my dogs are currently "up to date" but only for a few more months, and they will never recieve another vaccine again unless titre tests prove its necessary. My three year old Standard Poodle mix nearly *died* BOTH times we vaccinated him after we adopted him. He had a very serious reaction and now has a life time incurable autoimmune disease, has developed serious allergies, and a whole assortment of issues after recieving vaccines. My veterinarian is in agreement with me that he should never recieve them again.
I have another Standard Poodle that is currently up to date but will not be recieving any more because he is 9 years old. I don't vaccinate my senior pets.
I also have a 15 year old Cocker Spaniel with Cancer, but has postive titres (which mean she has immunity, despite the cancer). She will never recieve another vaccine again becasue of her age, proven immunity, and cancer.
My fourth dog I would be willing to vaccinate as shes always tolerated the shots before and is only 7 right now, but because all the other's wont recieve them, I don't see the point in it and subjecting her to harm that I'm protecting the others from.
(Also, the American Animal Hospital Association now recommends vaccines only to be given every 3 years. Most other Veterinary associations are also changing their recommendations to titre testing or giving vaccines every 3-5 years).
My cats all recieved their kitten shots, but haven't recieved any others. I don't titre test them. My bunnies dont get vaccines, and I dont even know if veterinarians recommend that or not?
Fostering to adopt may be my only chance to raise a family and its my dream.... but I can't put my dogs who were my children first in harms way as a sacrifice to have two-legged children, either. Nor can we handle any more veterinary bills associated with vaccine reactions. One sick dog from vaccine reaction is enough!
Does anyone have any experience with this and do you know if I will be able to adopt or if the state allows titre exemptions or health exemptions by the veterinarian?
