TORONTO ? Dragonslayer, Tristan Patterson?s documentary about a California skate-punk who spends his days getting wasted and road-tripping, picked up the best international feature trophy at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival on Friday night.
The juried award came with a $10,000 prize.
Hot Docs also gave a special jury prize in the international feature competition to The Castle, Massimo D'Anolfi and Martina Parenti?s film about the ennui and heightened tensions of border security at Milan's Malpensa Airport.
And the trophy for best mid-length documentary went to Our Newspaper, Eline Flipse?s portrait of a disgruntled journalist who quits The Leninist and starts Our Newspaper in a remote Russian village.
Other winners: the best short documentary prize went to Catherine van Campen?s Flying Anne, about a girl with Tourette?s looking for love and acceptance, the HBO documentary emerging artist award went to director Michal Marczak for his film At The Edge of Russia, and the Lindalee Tracey award went to Quebec-based documentary filmmaker Alexandre Hamel.
Closer to home, the best Canadian feature trophy was picked up by Julia Ivanova?s Family Portrait in Black and White, about a Ukrainian woman who looks after 23 abandoned children, and the Don Haig Award, presented annually to a Canadian documentary filmmaker, went to Toronto-based writer and director Rama Rau.
The Hot Docs festival wraps on Sunday.
