Jason Hammel came into yesterday?s game with a 2.78 ERA and just three homers allowed in nine starts this season, but the Orioles right-hander served up four homers to the Blue Jays and afterward got about as close to accusing them of stealing signs as he could possibly get without actually doing it.

Here?s what Hammel told Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun:

They?re a very potent offense and if you don?t make your pitches down they?re going to get them out. They were taking some pretty big hacks on my breaking stuff too, which leads me to believe it was something else. It is what it is. I need to keep the ball down.

When you?re locating your fastball, you?re going to give up some home runs there, but the swings they were taking on he breaking stuff, it was pretty amazing to me. I don?t think you can take swings like that not knowing they?re coming. I don?t know. That?s all I can say.

This is far from the first time an opposing pitcher has accused the Blue Jays of stealing signs in Toronto and in fact Amy K. Nelson wrote a whole article about it in ESPN The Magazine a couple years ago, making ?the man in white? famous.

When asked if he was aware of the past accusations, Hammel replied:

There?s rumors and things like that. I don?t know. I can?t speak on that, but they were taking very, very big strong hacks on breaking stuff. It was something I?ve never seen before.

Hammel has started 125 career games. Not only was that the first time he?s allowed four homers, he?d allowed three homers just twice before and gave up zero homers in 65 of those 125 starts.

Toronto has hit .262 with an .803 OPS at home this season, compared to .231 with a .660 OPS on the road. Their splits weren?t quite as extreme last season, but the Blue Jays hit .254 with a .759 OPS at home compared to .244 with a .699 OPS on the road. So ? if they are stealing signs at home the Blue Jays are at least doing a pretty effective job of it.

Female choice key to evolutionary shift to modern family

ScienceDaily (May 30, 2012) ? It is a question that has puzzled evolutionary biologists for years: Why did we stop being promiscuous and decide to settle down to start families?

Sergey Gavrilets, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, may have found the answer, and it lies in the power of female choice. The study reveals how females chose their mates played a critical role in human evolution by leading to monogamous relationships, which laid the foundation for the institution of the modern family.

Using mathematical modeling, the associate director for scientific activities at the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) at UT has discovered that the transformation may have occurred when early-hominid females started choosing males who were good providers.

Gavrilets' findings are published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The "sexual revolution" entailed males first competing with other males for dominance, as a way to get matings. However, low-ranked males?and eventually all males except those with the highest societal stature?began supplying females with provisions in what is called "food-for-mating" to get a leg up on the competition. Females showed preference for the "provisioning" males, leading males' energy to be spent on providing for females and females becoming increasingly faithful. This spurred self-domestication and the modern family as we know it today.

"This change has confounded scientists for a long time because many species would be much better off evolutionarily if the effort spent on males competing for mates was redirected towards increasing female fertility or survivorship of their offspring," said Gavrilets.

The study demonstrates mathematically that the most commonly proposed theories for the transition to human pair bonding?or coupling?are not biologically feasible.

However, the study advances a new model showing that the transition to pair-bonding can occur when female choice and faithfulness, among other factors, are included. The result is an increased emphasis on males provisioning females over male competition for mating.

"The study reveals that female choice played a crucial role in human evolution," said Gavrilets.

According to Gavrilets, the transition to coupling has opened the path to intensified male parental investment, which was a breakthrough adaptation with multiple anatomical, behavioral and physiological consequences for early hominids and for all of their descendants. It shifted the dynamic away from males competing with each other for sex to males competing with each other to see who is a better provider to get better mates.

"Pair bonding laid the foundation for a later emergence of the institution of the modern family," said Gavrilets.

PARIS (AP) -Italy striker Mario Balotelli says he would "kill" someone who throws bananas at him in the street.

Balotelli was quoted as saying in France Football magazine that "if someone throws bananas at me in the street, I'll go to jail because I'll kill him."

The interview in the biweekly magazine was published in French.

Balotelli also says he "can't stand racism" and will walk off the field if he hears racist chants in stadiums at next month's European Championship in Poland and Ukraine.

Balotelli won the Italian league three times with Inter Milan before joining Manchester City in 2010. He helped City win the Premier League title this season.

The Italian has also made headlines with his antics off the field.

ACLU lawsuit to challenge Ill. gay marriage ban

CHICAGO (AP) ? More than two dozen gay and lesbian couples in Illinois plan to file lawsuits Wednesday arguing that it's unconstitutional for the state to deny them the right to marry, a move advocates hope will lead to legalized same-sex marriage in Illinois.

The two lawsuits ? backed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois and the New York-based gay advocacy group Lambda Legal ? include couples from the Chicago area, Bloomington and Marion. Both challenge a state law that defines marriage as between a man and woman, arguing that the Illinois Constitution guarantees the right for same-sex couples to marry under due process and equality clauses.

Legislation to eliminate the law's language that prohibits gay marriage is pending, but a vote isn't expected before the legislative session is scheduled to end this week. And although Illinois enacted same-sex civil unions last year, couples in the lawsuits said the limited rights and protections make them feel like second-class citizens.

The lead plaintiffs in the ACLU lawsuit, which includes nine couples, are Chicago police detective Tanya Lazaro and systems analyst Elizabeth Matos. The women, who've been together 15 years and have two children, reject the notion of a civil union.

"It's not the same thing as a marriage. We want our relationship, our love and our commitment we've shown for 15 years to be recognized like everybody else's," Lazaro said. "When you're growing up, you don't dream of civil unions."

Advocates hope the lawsuits will make their way to the Illinois Supreme Court.

Currently, the District of Columbia and six states ? Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont ? have legalized gay marriage, either because of legislation or the courts.

Courts decided for gay marriage in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa. A lawsuit challenging an Iowa law barring gay marriage prompted the Iowa Supreme Court to legalize it in 2009. However, the three justices up for retention elections the next year were voted off the bench after being targeted by groups angered by the court's decision.

Lambda Legal filed the Iowa lawsuit in 2005, and advocates say the time for Illinois is now.

It's a year after same-sex civil unions were enacted, and recent polls show public support for same-sex marriage has steadily increased. President Barack Obama said earlier this month that he endorsed gay marriage, and Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn stepped up his public support.

"We've waited long enough," said John Knight, director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Project of the ACLU of Illinois. "It certainly helps that our president from the great state of Illinois has come forward and been a leader in recognizing freedom of same sex couples to marry."

Civil unions give same-sex couples some, but not all, of the same legal rights and protections as marriage in Illinois, such as the power to decide medical treatment for a partner and to inherit a partner's property. When that law was approved, however, opponents including some religious and conservative groups said it was an unwanted step toward gay marriage.

"The courts shouldn't mandate it. Nobody should mandate homosexual marriage," Colleen Nolen, director of the conservative Concerned Women for America, said late Tuesday.

Phone messages left Tuesday evening with other conservative groups and at the offices of lawmakers who've spoken against civil unions or gay marriage in the past weren't immediately returned.

Lambda Legal, whose lawsuit has 16 couples, and the ACLU share the same goal to legalize gay marriage in Illinois but decided to pursue separate lawsuits because they have different historic missions. The lawsuits also slightly differ in legal reasoning.

Lambda Legal's lawsuit includes Janean Watkins and Lakeesha Harris, who were the first couple in line last year to get a civil union license from Cook County. They have been together for a dozen years and are raising six children, who are the reason Watkins wants to be married.

"We have the kids, it's important for them to see that the relationship we're in is validated by the state," she said.

A?teenager from Westchester County, N.Y., has been missing since last Friday and was "in a fragile state" when he was last seen, his concerned parents said.

Police say?Pierce Crowley, 15, of Rye, N.Y.,?left New York-Presbyterian Hospital in White Plains, N.Y. with a close friend before he went missing.

In an email to friends, his parents?wrote that their son was ?in a fragile state? and hadn't been feeling well when he disappeared. "It is URGENT that we?locate him ASAP," they wrote,?according to the New York's Hudson Valley Journal News.

It's not clear what Crowley was in the hospital for. The White Plains medical center is one of the top psychiatric hospitals in the nation.

According to police, Crowley's friend came forward to say the two left the hospital and went to The Cheesecake Factory restaurant together, Newsday reported.

The two then took a cab to the White Plains Metro-North train station, the report said. Crowley's friend took a train to New York City while Crowley stayed behind in the cab.

According to White Plains police, Crowley was last seen wearing a bright blue Florida Gators short sleeve T-shirt with dark blue jeans and black sneakers with lime green-trim. The teen is enrolled at Iona Prep in New Rochelle.

Crowley has light brown hair, blue eyes, and wears braces, The Journal News said. He is 5'10'' and 150 pounds.

Hundreds of volunteers have mobilized to help the Crowleys find their son, a family friend told media. Fliers were posted in Westchester, Manhattan and the Bronx, and the family set up a Facebook page.?

?We love Pierce. We miss Pierce,? his father, Peter Crowley, said, according to Newsday. ?His brothers miss Pierce. We need him home.?

Crowley family friend Peggy Dunne told The Journal News, ?(Pierce) is a charming, talented, bright student and an amazing athlete.?His family and his friends are just totally distraught about him missing.?

There is a reward for information that leads to his safe return, the family said. White Plains police have asked anyone with tips to contact them.

Updated at 7:52 a.m. ET: LONDON -- Two U.S. reports published Tuesday provide significant insights into President Obama?s personal and controversial role in the escalating covert U.S. drone war in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia.

In a major extract from Daniel Klaidman?s forthcoming book Kill Or Capture, the author reveals extensive details of how secret U.S. drone strikes have evolved under Obama ? and how the president knew of civilian casualties from his earliest days in office.

The New York Times has also published a key investigation exploring how the Obama Administration runs its secret 'Kill List'?? the names of those chosen for execution by CIA and Pentagon drones outside the conventional battlefield.

The Times' report also reveals that President Obama "embraced" a broadening of the term "civilian", helping to limit any public controversy over "non-combatant" deaths.

As the Bureau's own data on Pakistan makes clear, the very first covert drone strikes of the Obama presidency, just three days after he took office, resulted in civilian deaths in Pakistan. As many as 19 civilians ? including four children ? died in two error-filled attacks.

Until now it had been thought that Obama was initially unaware of the civilian deaths. Bob Woodward has reported that the president was only told by CIA chief Michael Hayden that the strikes had missed their High Value Target but had killed "five al Qaeda militants."

Now Newsweek correspondent Daniel Klaidman reveals that Obama knew about the civilian deaths within hours. He reports an anonymous participant at a subsequent meeting with the president: "You could tell from his body language that he was not a happy man." Obama is described aggressively questioning the tactics used.

Yet despite the errors, the president ultimately chose to keep in place the CIA?s controversial policy of using "signature strikes" against unknown militants. That tactic has just been extended to Yemen.

'Covert' US drone operation is mapped on Twitter

On another notorious occasion, the article reveals that U.S. officials were aware at the earliest stage that civilians ? including "dozens of women and children" ? had died in Obama?s first ordered strike in Yemen in December 2009. The Bureau recently named all 44 civilians killed in that attack by cruise missiles.

'I'd have to go to confession'
No U.S. officials have ever spoken publicly about the strike, although secret diplomatic cables released by Wikileaks proved that the U.S. was responsible. Now Klaidman reveals that Jeh Johnson, one of the State Department?s senior lawyers, watched the strike take place with others on a video screen:

"Johnson returned to his Georgetown home around midnight that evening, drained and exhausted. Later there were reports from human-rights groups that dozens of women and children had been killed in the attacks, reports that a military source involved in the operation termed ?persuasive.? Johnson would confide to others, ?If I were Catholic, I?d have to go to confession.?

Klaidman describes a world in which the CIA and Pentagon constantly push for significant attacks on the U.S.?s enemies. In March 2009, for example, then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen reportedly called for the bombing of an entire training camp in southern Somalia in order to kill one militant leader.

One dissenter at the meeting is said to have described the tactic as "carpet-bombing a country." The attack did not go ahead.

Obama is generally described as attempting to rein back both the CIA and the Pentagon. But in the case of Anwar al-Awlaki ? "Obama?s Threat Number One" ? different rules applied.

An American-born cleric killed in Yemen played a "significant operational role" in plotting and inspiring attacks on the United States, U.S. officials said Friday. Anwar al-Awlaki was implicated in a botched attempt to bomb a Detroit-bound plane in 2009. NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports.

According to Klaidman, Obama let it be known that he would consider allowing civilian deaths if it meant killing the U.S.-Yemeni cleric. "Bring it to me and let me decide in the reality of the moment rather than in the abstract," an aide recalls him saying. No civilians died that day, as it turned out.

In its own major investigation, the New York Times examines the secret US 'Kill List'?? the names of those chosen for death at the hands of US drones. The report is based on interviews with more than 36 key individuals with knowledge of the scheme.

The Times' report says:

"[Obama's] first term has seen private warnings from top officials about a 'Whac-A-Mole' approach to counterterrorism; the invention of a new category of aerial attack following complaints of careless targeting; and presidential acquiescence in a formula for counting civilian deaths that some officials think is skewed to produce low numbers."

It is often been reported that President Obama has urged officials to avoid wherever possible the deaths of civilians in covert U.S. actions in Pakistan and elsewhere. But reporters Jo Becker and Scott Shane reveal that Obama inserted a loophole.

"Mr. Obama embraced a disputed method for counting civilian casualties that did little to box him in. It in effect counts all military-age males in a strike zone as combatants, according to several administration officials, unless there is explicit intelligence posthumously proving them innocent."

So concerned have some officials been by this "false accounting" that they have taken their concerns direct to the White House, according to the New York Times.

The revelation helps explain the wide variation between credible reports of civilian deaths in Pakistan by the Bureau and others, and the CIA?s claims that it had killed no "non-combatants" between May 2010 and September 2011 ? and possibly later.

Msnbc terrorism analyst Evan Kohlmann discusses why the death of Anwar al-Awlaki is a big blow to future al-Qaida operations in America.

The investigation also reveals that more than 100 U.S. officials take part in a weekly "death list" video conference run by the Pentagon, at which it is decided who will be added to the U.S. military?s kill/ capture lists. "A parallel, more cloistered selection process at the CIA focuses largely on Pakistan, where that agency conducts strikes," the paper reports.

But according to at least one former senior administration official, Obama?s obsession with targeted killings is "dangerously seductive." Retired admiral Dennis Blair, the former US Director of National Intelligence, told the paper that the campaign was:

"The politically advantageous thing to do ? low cost, no US casualties, gives the appearance of toughness. It plays well domestically, and it is unpopular only in other countries. Any damage it does to the national interest only shows up over the long term."

Clarification: An earlier version of this story said that President Obama "personally authorized the broadening of the term 'civilian'."?However, the original New York Times report cited said that Obama "embraced a disputed method for counting civilian casualties that did little to box him in."

New Zealand triplets, age 2, among Qatar mall dead

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? Two-year-old New Zealand triplets are among the 13 children killed in a fire in a shopping mall in Qatar.

New Zealand media on Tuesday named the triplets as Lillie, Jackson and Willsher Weekes. Their parents, Jane and Martin Weekes, previously lived in Wellington.

"Our daughter rang. What can you say? It's absolutely devastating," the children's grandmother, Jo Turner, told Fairfax Media.

In all, 19 people died in the fire that broke out late Monday morning in Villaggio mall in the capital Doha. At least some of the victims died as rescuers struggled to reach a child care center at the mall, according to Qatar's Minister of State for Interior Affairs, Sheik Abdullah bin Nasser Al Thani.

Turner said her daughter had lived in Qatar for about five years, although she had returned to New Zealand to give birth to the triplets.

"They were everything to her. She was a great mum. She was a hands-on mum," Turner told Fairfax. "I didn't push her for any information. She just told us what she needed to tell us. It was just that 'Our babies, they died in a fire at the day care center.'"

According to Martin Weekes' profile on networking site LinkedIn, he is a senior adviser at Qatar Media Services and a former chief executive of Auckland's Eden Park sports stadium.

New Zealand's Prime Minister John Key told reporters earlier Tuesday that based on the best information he had, he believed that three New Zealand triplets had died.

"The family are obviously dealing with the terrible grief that they have at this time," Key said. "Obviously it's a very tragic day for that family and my thoughts are with them during this difficult time."

Vegan Macaroni Salad Recipe | Eat Drink Better

Memorial Day is once again upon us. If you live in the South like I do, there really is no way around spending time in the outdoors this time of year. Add in potluck style food offerings and refreshing beverages and it becomes a can?t miss occasion.

If you find yourself excited about attending a cookout this holiday, want to bring a vegan dish, but also want something on the traditional side for those patrons unfamiliar with tofu or seitan, vegan macaroni salad is a winner.

This recipe has become my go-to party dish, and it tastes so close to the macaroni salad I grew up with! Plus, it takes very little prep time and minimal ingredients.

Country Macaroni Salad

4 cups whole wheat macaroni noodles
1 cup vegan mayo (I prefer Veganaise, which comes in soy-free, grapeseed,?reduced?fat and many other varieties. You can find this at any Whole Foods or Trader Joe?s)
2 tablespoons vinegar
1/4 cup dijon mustard
2-3 celery stalks, sliced (I like my vegetables a little stockier, but you could dice finely as well)
1 medium sized onion, diced (I would go with a yellow or white variety, but you could also use red onions for a spicier salad)
2 -3 carrots, sliced thin
1/3 cup sugar (I just use regular old sugar, but for a healthier version, you could experiment with different kinds of sweeteners. I wouldn?t skip this ingredient, however, because it really does give the dish a tangy flavor)
Sea salt and pepper to taste

Boil a pot of water and add pasta. Whole wheat pasta might take a little longer than regular pasta to soften.

Drain pasta and set aside.

In a large bowl, mix vegan mayo, vinegar, dijon mustard, sugar, salt and pepper.

Then, add celery, carrots and onion to bowl, stirring a few times to mix well. (You can add other vegetables if desired. Some options include olives, capers, roma tomatoes or pickles.)

Mix drained macaroni with vegetables and dressing, careful not to mash the pasta.

Leave in fridge overnight.

This will serve a pretty big group, and it only takes 15- 20 minutes to prepare, making the payoff well worth it.
