Dietary cleanses: a popular team-building tool | YES Partners ...

The dietary cleanse has been the butt of countless jokes ? from TV sitcoms and movies to zingers exchanged at the watercooler. The general impression is of imbibing horrific liquid concoctions more suited to a witch's cauldron than your daily-use Nalgene bottle. But, believe it or not, some entrepreneurs see cleanses as a way to unite their staffs ? with varying opinions on the taste of the mixtures themselves.

In a July article in The New York Times, Michael Godshall, a founder of Project Dstllry in Brooklyn, New York, discussed how he and his partners decided that a 3-day, 1,200-calorie cleanse would be a good team unity exercise for their entire company.

"It was a week when we were slammed, and we just needed to pull together as a community," Godshall, the company?s creative director, told the Times. "It was something we could do where we thought, 'We're all in this together.'"

The Times article goes on to list several other companies that have jumped on the cleanse bandwagon, including the entire production staff for Oprah Winfrey. Whether the main draw is the health benefit or the sense of unity it fosters with co-workers, cleanses are becoming more and more popular.

Now, you may be in favor of a multi-day liquid diet for the entire company, or something even more outside the box. Either way, there is an important lesson to be learned from Godshall's experience.

Building a positive corporate culture and a sense of unity among a workforce goes a long way toward a company's success. By having founders and chief executives participate in such endeavors, it instills a real sense of team in employees at every level ? especially in turbulent times for the business.

CEO responsibilities include working to galvanize the rank and file and motivate them to strive for success. Maybe a cleanse is one way of doing so.
