Tuesday?s Division 2 South Sectional baseball quarterfinal matchup against Plymouth North didn?t start out well for host Hingham.
The Eagles pushed across three runs in the first inning and were threatening for more when Hingham coach Frank Niles made a pitching change and brought in junior left-hander John Carlson.
Carlson got out of a bases-loaded jam with two strikeouts, turning the momentum in favor of the Harbormen, who eventually scratched out a 5-4 victory. Cody Clifford?s RBI single in the sixth inning was the difference.
No. 4 Hingham (17-6) advances to Thursday?s semifinals (7 p.m., Adams Field, Quincy) against top-seeded Nauset (17-4).
No. 5 Plymouth North ends its season at 15-7.
Carlson retired the first seven batters he faced and struck out eight in 62/3 innings. He set down the Eagles in order in the seventh thanks to an off-balance catch in foul territory by second baseman Billy Boynton, who was Hingham?s starting pitcher.
?Billy had some tough luck in the first inning, but he ended up contributing in the end,? said Niles. ?And Johnny Carlson was excellent today. He?s a gutsy kid. It was a tough situation to come into, but he told me, ?No problem, I can come in from left field and do this.??
Plymouth North senior captain Ryan Moskos opened the game with a base hit and advanced to second on an infield hit from Corey Boudreau. David Murphy reached on an error to score Moskos, and designated hitter Brian Christian also reached on an error to score Boudreau. Derek Salvucci?s single loaded the bases, and Joe Walsh drew a walk to force home Murphy for a 3-0 lead.
?I knew we had one out and the bases were loaded, and I just focused on one batter and one pitch at a time and got us out of it,? said Carlson, who was making his first relief appearance of the season. ?The team kind of got some momentum going and I got a few runs later in the game.?
Leadoff batter Stephan White started the Hingham comeback with a sharp single to center in the third inning. He moved to third on a base hit by Joe Leahy and scored on a Eddie Bowler ground out.
Leahy made it a one-run game when he stole third and scored when the throw bounced into the outfield. Junior Austin Irvin, who had a double and a triple in Hingham?s 17-3, first-round win over Wellesley, then drove a fly ball over the fence in left for his first home run of the season to tie it at 3-3.
Plymouth North took a 4-3 lead in the sixth when Moskos walked and then stole second, third and home, arriving at the plate before Hingham catcher David Hutchins could apply the tag. Moskos was 40 for 40 on steal attempts this season.
?It?s pretty cool stealing home and it looked like we were going to have the winning run by stealing home,? said Plymouth North coach Dwayne Follette.
Hingham did its own base running during its half of the sixth inning. Irvin led the frame with a single and was erased by a groundout by Carlson. Hutchins singled to send Carlson to third and drive tough-luck Plymouth North starter Kenny Drew from the game. Carlson scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 4-4, and pinch runner Brett Tivnan came across with the winning run on Clifford?s single.
