Harcum College's Early Childhood Education Program Receives ...

Harcum College?s Early Childhood Education (ECE) program has recently received accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) for seven years.

The ECE program at Harcum College, which has grown rapidly over the past five years, had its first full peer review in the Spring of 2012. The NAEYC Commission reviewed and evaluated the program for its ability to support positive student outcomes in relation to the accreditation standards, as well as its use of student assessments and performance data to increase program effectiveness, capacity and innovation.

?This accreditation is an affirmation of the ECE program?s focus on career preparation and student success,? said Joanne Thames, Harcum?s ECE Program Director. ?Although the accreditation is not a formal requirement for Harcum to offer its program, it is a professional credential that we hold in high esteem, as it ensures our students are receiving the best possible education and training for their field of work.?

The NAEYC peer review team noted Harcum?s high quality of teaching, stating that ?faculty members work with students to make learning experiences meaningful and practical? in a student population that is ?diverse in terms of age, race, ethnicity, ability and many other factors.? The report also references the program?s active presence and involvement in the community, which enables students to experience various field settings every semester.

In granting accreditation, the NAEYC also stated that ?students, administrators and community stakeholders who were interviewed spoke highly of the program's level of commitment to meeting student needs, as well as the high quality of teaching. Faculty members are academically qualified for their specific professional roles; have had direct, substantial professional experience; and continue to enhance their expertise in early childhood education.?

This is reflected in the average class size of Harcum?s ECE classes, which is 15. Dr. Laura Taddei, Associate Program Director, noted that many community colleges and four-year colleges have 30 or more students in a class.? ?It?s really very simple,? Taddei said. ?The quality of care rises with the training of the ECE graduate, and the best graduates get personal attention and support in class. This is a hallmark of Harcum?s ECE program.?

Harcum?s ECE program, which is aligned to Pennsylvania Chapter 49-2 regulations for teaching, is designed to prepare students for careers in childcare as ECE-certified teachers (pre-kindergarten through fourth grade), as well as assistant teachers or assistance group supervisors in infant/toddler programs and preschools. Graduates of the associate degree program can also transfer to four-year programs to pursue a degree in education for additional teacher certifications.
