If you?re a fan of the arts, mark 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, on your calendar! Blumenthal Performing Arts will bring together critics and writers to share personally, and then together in discussion, what they see on the horizon for the next season in arts, entertainment, music and film.
And you?re invited to bring your own questions to the event at McGlohon Theater. As a preview, I caught up with the panelists and the host to get their early thoughts on the evening. Catch the posts today, Thursday (Oct. 11), Sunday (Oct. 14), Oct. 17, 18 and 21.
First up is Tony Brown, host of ?The BUZZ This Season.? Tony is?a Charlotte-based writer, journalist and consultant to nonprofit arts organizations who covered culture for The Charlotte Observer from 1988 until 1999.
What will you discuss during The BUZZ This Season?
I want to ask, ?What is the state of the arts in Charlotte in the new economic and political paradigm?? Seems to me, as an outsider returning to town that the arts have been moved to the back burner at a time when Charlotte is beginning to cash in on its aspirations to be a ?world-class city.? Can those aspirations be realized without a strong arts community? What kind of arts community does Charlotte want and deserve? Conversely, what are the arts organizations doing to make themselves indispensable to the community?
What do you think about this season?s crop of shows?
I?m leaving this to the panelists.
What?s your biggest hope for the city?s cultural scene in ?12-?13?
That it again becomes one of the aspects of life in Charlotte that the population sees as essential to city life.
Coming up:
Tomorrow (10/11): Michael J. Solender?(theater, blog culture)
Sunday (10/14): Courtney Devores?(pop music, pop culture in general)
