Reminder for the week: Anglers need to know species, size limits?

DOVER (Aug. 9, 2012) ? To achieve public compliance through education and enforcement actions that help conserve Delaware?s fish and wildlife resources and ensure safe boating and public safety, DNREC Division of Fish & Wildlife Enforcement agents responded to 23 complaints and issued 42 citations between Aug. 1 and Aug. 8. Incidents of note included:?

????????? On Aug. 1, F&W agents while on routine patrol at the C&D Canal Wildlife Area apprehended Billyjoe J. Lane, 31, of Newark, who was wanted on outstanding warrants. Lane paid a fine at Justice of the Peace Court 9 in Middletown for an outstanding fishing license violation, then was turned over to Capitol Police at the New Castle County Court of Common Pleas on an unrelated warrant.

Citations issued by violation type included the following, with the number of charges in parentheses:

Recreational Fisheries Conservation: Possession of undersized blue crabs (6), New Castle and Sussex counties; possession of undersized summer flounder (6), possession of undersized black sea bass (2), possession of undersized croaker (3), possession of undersized weakfish (5), and improperly marked recreational crab pot (1), Sussex County.

Wildlife Conservation: Trespassing after hours in a state wildlife area (1), Sussex County.

Boating Safety: OUI/operating a vessel under the influence (1), assault with a motor vessel (1), reckless endangering (5), reckless operation of motor vessel (1), negligent operation of motor vessel (2), inattentive operation of motor vessel (2), and excessive vessel speed (2), Sussex County; no life jackets on children age 12 or younger as required by law (1), and operating a motor vessel without a boating safety certificate (1), Sussex County.

The Division of Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Section reminds recreational anglers to check size limits on their catches before considering them ?keepers.? A full-color reference guide to species, seasons, sizes and creel limits can be found inside the 2012 Delaware Fishing Guide. The guide is available at licensing agents statewide, along with specially marked fishing rulers to measure catches to determine if a species meets Delaware?s size limits.

?Anglers should familiarize themselves with common species in the area where they are fishing and, if in doubt, consult their Delaware Fishing Guide for size limits,? said Sgt. Gregory Rhodes of Fish and Wildlife Enforcement. ?It?s also a good rule of thumb to release any fish they cannot identify." However, Delaware also?has five invasive species?that should be killed rather than returned to the water, he noted.?Those invasive species?are the northern snakehead, flathead catfish and blue catfish, along with the mitten crab and red swamp crayfish.
