Sample Some Yucatan Candy

If you have studied Yucatan cuisine a little bit, then you know that in comparison to other regions of Mexico, it is on the sweeter side of things. Chocolate was born in Yucatan, so it is really no surprise that Mexicans and Mayans have a sweet tooth. Moreover, Mexico consumes more cola per capita than any other nation in the world. It begs the question, what is Mexican candy like?

Let's begin with something familiar, the Bocadin bar. This is basically Mexico's version of a Kit-Kat bar, but smaller. A Bocadin bar is small, but it is also cheap. A case of 50 can be had for fewer than ten dollars US, if ordered online.

BubuLubu could be considered the wagon wheel of Mexico, without the cookie part. It consists of a marshmallowy center dipped in red jelly and coated with chocolate. For anyone with a serious sweet tooth, this is the one to choose. Some might call it sickly sweet, other may call it heaven.

If chocolate isn't your thing (scandalous!), then try Malvaviscos. They are just wee little marshmallows in funny shapes. For those that prefer their candy simple, Malvaviscos will hit the spot, and we are told they go down well with a cool beverage on a hot day. Doesn't anything go down well with a cool beverage on a hot day?

Our next candy, or grouping of candy, is for the people who enjoy ginger beer and Sour Patch Kids. Pica, Picazon and Rey are little sweet powders that bite you back - with spice! And really, is there any other sweet treat that is more appropriate for Mexico as a whole? Pica is the baby of the series, nice and sweet with just a little bit of spice. Picazon is more spicy, but Rey is the 'king' spice! And all are sweet as pie, um chocolate.

Now let's finish off with Panditas, not spicy and not chocolate either. Panditas rival Gummy Bears as a sweet treat, but are infinitely better! Shaped like little panda bears, they go very well with a quick shot of very good, very old tequila.

Stock up your pockets with BubuLubus, Bocadins, and Panditas for the kids back home. Then be sure to have your very own stash of Picas, Picazons and Reys! Chocolate may have its origin in the Yucatan, but some of the very best sweet treats in Mexico don't have any chocolate in them at all. Have fun, experiment with a few things from the local candy bar. Not much can go wrong with candy!
