School Time Already? | The Charlotte Moms

Parenting Advice

LLAW-Rectangle? Another summer is coming to a close. ?Over the last 10 days my family has been ?enjoying every minute of?the Olympic broadcasts. ?Except for the special TV viewing, these last few weeks have been pretty much the same as the end of summer is every year. ?We have been collecting school supplies and supplementing wardrobes, ?filling out forms and turning them in to the various school offices and making sure that my children make it to fall sport practices. ?We are enjoying a few more days at the pool and a few more days spent with friends while also trying to gather all the necessities for the school year.

In the hustle and bustle to get ready for the school year, sometimes we forget to make sure that our children are not only prepared with all their belongings but are also physically ready for the school year schedule. ?Here are some ideas to consider in the last weeks of summer to help all of you be at your best during the first week of school:

  • Begin slowly changing the bedtime to school hours by pushing the evening routine back by small increments each night.
  • For pre-schoolers and young elementary children, do a few dry runs with the trip to and from school and begin to figure out afternoon/evening routines.
  • If you have little ones at home whose schedules will be changed due to an older sibling?s school schedule, start to adjust the schedules now to make the transition more gradual and manageable.
  • Set a morning routine that can become easily recognizable to your child. ?Even if you don?t start these mornings as early as you would during the school year, having a pattern for your child to follow each morning in the next few weeks can make school mornings, when they come, easier to navigate.

With a few small adjustments over the last weeks of summer, your family can be much more ready to jump back into the school year schedule.
